Valentina Acosta Giraldo: Colombia's star archer and Instagram sensation

World Youth Championships gold
She trained at the renowned World Archery Excellence Centre and rapidly rose through the ranks. In 2019, she made headlines by winning gold at the World Youth Championships in Madrid, dominating the recurve junior women’s event. She was just 19 at the time, but her composure on the shooting line suggested experience far beyond her years.
A national sporting icon
That win not only put her on the map internationally, it made her a national sports figure in Colombia — a country where football tends to dominate the sporting conversation.
Tokyo Olympics
Acosta Giraldo qualified for the Tokyo 2020 (held 2021) Olympics, a significant milestone in a country where Olympic archers are rare. She didn’t medal, but her presence alone marked a turning point: Colombia had a new face in archery, and it was one that fans — especially young ones — could relate to.

At the time of the Tokyo Olympics, she spoke in a refreshing way about the archer's mindset. "When you are there shooting, there’s something that happens in your mind," she told World Archery in 2021.

Burn out after Tokyo
Following an intense lead up to and fall out from the Tokyo Olympics, where her popularity soared, she found herself unable to focus entirely on her archery, instead opting to lean into other projects, such as art and her social media brand, as she told her YouTube channel in 2023.

No plans for 2028 annouced – yet
Although she did try and qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics, it wasn't to be. While she hasn't set any plans in motion for 2028, she hasn't ruled anything out either.
