Ricky's son scores in dream debut as Raiders hold on

Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart had plenty to celebrate at Campbelltown on Friday night as he watched his side claim victory, with his son adding to the tally, having scored on debut.

When Nine's cameras panned to Stuart two minutes after the try, the coach walked away but wasn't showing emotion.

Brad Fittler revealed that wasn't the true reaction.

Jed Stuart celebrates a try on debut.

"He's given those eyes a little bit of a wipe, they were glistening about two minutes ago," he said on Nine.

"When Jed got the ball he gave a little 'come on Jed, come on mate', like he was riding him home in a horse race."

Fittler did add Stuart's wife, Kaylie, had tears in her eyes.

Jed's try was part of a dream first half for the Raiders, keeping the Tigers scoreless.

Joseph Tapine scored first off an assist from fellow prop Josh Papalii.

Jed was then next over from a brilliant flick pass by centre Seb Kris.

"How good's that?," Phil Gould said.

Tom Starling then extended the lead in the 23rd minute with the Raiders going into the sheds leading 16-4.

Raiders assistant Brock Shepperd explained to Fittler at half time that it was a tame reaction from his coach.

"He's kept his emotions in check during the week ... probably internally let out a little bit," he said.

It was a different side that came out of the Tigers sheds in the second half.

Alex Seyfarth scored in the 48th minute from a smart Jarome Luai grubber.

Then Starford To'a crossed moments later to put the Tigers in striking distance at 16-12.

Controversy hit late in the match when the Raiders successfully performed a captain's challenge for a hair pull.

With eight minutes left, Xavier Savage was penalised for a ruck infringement on Jeral Skelton.

But Savage pleaded there'd been a hair pull with the Raiders challenging the call.

"You can't overturn that for a hair pull ... stop it," Andrew Johns said.

The eighth Immortal's pleas fell on deaf ears though, with the Bunker overturning the penalty and ruling there'd been a hair pull.

"Funny game rugby league, it's changed, it's changed before our eyes," Gould said.

"That's a big moment."

Jeral Skelton was penalised for a hair pull on Xavier Savage.

Fittler didn't agree.

"I can't believe you two think that's not right, are you serious? Do you think it's OK to pull someone's hair like that? You're mad, you two have gone mad," he laughed.

In the end, the Tigers couldn't find a killer blow as the Raiders defence held on at full time.

Post-match, Jed was delighted when speaking to Fittler.

"That was great, scoring on debut's pretty special," he said.

Both father and son shared a special embrace after the interview with the coach still managing to hold back his tears.
