Grand Slam champion CoCo Gauff surprises tennis clinic at New Orleans’ Joe Brown Park
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Coco Gauff, two-time Grand Slam singles champion, surprised a local tennis clinic at Joe Brown Park on Monday, Nov. 24.
Earlier this year, 10 courts at the park were refurbished as part of the US Open Legacy Initiative, that was launched in recognition of Gauff’s 2023 US Open women’s singles title. This initiative has already impacted more than 100 facilities and more than 700 tennis courts across the United States, according to a news release
The United States Tennis Association pledged $3 million, which is equivalent to Gauff’s 2023 prize money, to refresh public tennis courts across the nation.
Based on the Gauff family’s ties to the city, they intentionally hand-picked refurbishing tennis courts in New Orleans.
“New Orleans has a super close place in my heart and to be able to be back here is really cool,” Gauff said. “To be able to do this initiative with USTA is amazing.”
“By refurbishing the public courts at Joe W. Brown Park, we are expanding access to the game
and giving more players a better place to play,” Brian Vahaly, chairman of the board and interm co-CEO of USTA, said. “We are grateful to partner with New Orleans on this project and proud to support a facility that will benefit the community for years to come.”
At the event, there was a tennis clinic run by local non-profit A’s & Aces, a chapter of the USTA Foundation’s National Junior Tennis and Learning Network.
“It was just exciting to see all the children, all of the families, and the community come together through our partnership with the city and the USTA,” Anna Monhartova, A’s & Aces co-cofounder, said. “It is just something that will be memorable for everyone for the rest of their lives.”
