New bill targets dual citizenship in US

Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-OH) plans to introduce the Exclusive Citizenship Act of 2025 to end dual citizenship and require U.S. citizens who hold foreign citizenship to choose one country.

The bill would give current dual citizens one year to renounce a foreign citizenship or notify DHS that they will give up U.S. citizenship, require State and Homeland Security departments to track compliance, and classify those who do not comply as aliens.

The measure is likely to face legal challenges because courts have long protected dual citizenship.

Moreno said, “One of the greatest honors of my life was when I became an American citizen at 18, the first opportunity I could do so. It was an honor to pledge an Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America and only to the United States of America. Being an American citizen is an honor and a privilege — and if you want to be an American — it’s all or nothing.”

“It’s time to end dual citizenship for good,” he concluded.
