Pedestrian bridge to be demolished, lanes to be closed in latest round of LAX construction
The latest round of construction at LAX will see a pedestrian bridge demolished, and lane closures associated with the work may cause delays when picking up or dropping off passengers.
The pedestrian bridge between Parking Structure 5 and Terminal 5 is set to be torn down beginning Tuesday, airport officials said in a statement. Terminal 5 itself was closed for major demolition and reconstruction this past October; it is anticipated to reopen in 2028.
T5 was home to JetBlue, Spirit and American Airlines. They have all since shifted to Terminals 1, 2 and 4, respectively.
According to officials, the work starting Tuesday will require temporary lane closures and traffic diversions on both the lower (arrivals) level and the upper (departures) level.
For both levels, closures and diversions will take place in the overnight hours this week, although there are some key differences to note:
Lower (arrivals) level: Tuesday through Sunday, Jan. 11 | 11 p.m. – 7 a.m.
- All outer lanes will be closed at the pedestrian bridge worksite. Vehicles will be detoured to inner lanes. All inner lanes, sidewalks and crosswalks will still be maintained except crosswalks to Parking Structure 6 from Terminals 5 and 6.
- Lower (arrivals) level entrance on World Way South to Parking Structure 6 will be closed. Signage will be posted to alert customers of the closure. Travelers are advised to use the Lower West Way entrance to Parking Structure 5 (accessed by turning left off World Way after Parking Structure 2B) to get to Parking Structure 6.
- The Terminal 4 LAX-it shuttle stop will be closed, as will the Terminal 5 rental car shuttle stop. For both, signage will be posted to direct pedestrians to the next available stops.
Upper (departures) level: Wednesday through Friday, Jan. 9 | 11:59 p.m. – 4 a.m.
- All lanes will be closed at the pedestrian bridge worksite. Vehicles will be detoured on Upper West Way and Upper East Way. Sidewalk access will be maintained via a protective walkway, and flaggers will be on-site to help facilitate vehicle and pedestrian movement.
- Entrances from Upper West Way to Parking Structure 2B and Parking Structure 5 will be closed. Signage will be in place to alert guests of the closure, and lower-level entrances, exits and intra-structure vertical circulation paths will remain open.
- The Terminal 4 hotel and private parking shuttle stops will be closed. Travelers will be directed by signage to the next available stops.
- Buses (including charter and LAX FlyAway) will not be allowed on the upper level; instead, they will be redirected to the lower level. Guests will still be able to access buses and shuttles using the lower level. There will also be signage in place to direct guests to upward-moving elevators and escalators should they need them.
“Please watch for posted detour signage, use caution when traveling near construction areas and plan ahead for potential delays,” LAX officials advised.
The latest round of construction is part of LAX’s plan to modernize before the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The $30 billion project will “ensure efficiency and dependability for every traveler at one of the world’s busiest airports,” Los Angeles World Airports said.
