CLEVELAND, Ohio—January 27 is National Chocolate Cake Day, and if there’s one dessert that never goes out of style, it’s chocolate. Rich, fudgy, cocoa-packed — chocolate cake is the comfort food of desserts, and sometimes the craving hits when there’s no time (or patience) to bake from scratch.
Enter the grocery store cupcake.
Whether you’re scrambling for a last-minute office treat, bringing dessert to a get-together or simply standing in the bakery aisle debating which chocolate cupcake is actually worth it, store-bought options are often the fastest way to satisfy a serious chocolate craving.
To celebrate National Chocolate Cake Day 2026, the Best of Cleveland team tasted and ranked chocolate cupcakes from local grocery stores, putting each one to the test where it counts most: the depth of chocolate flavor in the cake and the quality of the frosting on top.

Some cupcakes delivered rich, indulgent bites worthy of the name, while others… didn’t quite rise to the occasion. We also included grab-and-go options for those times when you only need one or two cupcakes — or maybe a box of minis when sharing is expected (but optional).
So which grocery store bakeries deserve a spot on your dessert plate, and which ones should stay on the shelf?
Here’s how the chocolate cupcakes stacked up, from worst to best.

No. 6: Giant Eagle
Where we bought it: Giant Eagle
Price: $7.99
Servings in a pack: 6 cupcakes
Our Thoughts: The buttercream was lighter and less sweet than most, which we appreciated, but the cake itself was noticeably dry. With texture being a key factor, this one fell short despite a respectable frosting.
No. 5: Heinen’s

Where we bought it: Heinen’s
Price: $7.99
Servings in a pack: 6 cupcakes
Our Thoughts: Thick, smooth frosting with balanced sweetness paired with a dark, slightly bitter chocolate cake. While moist, the intensity of the chocolate pushed this toward a more niche appeal, keeping it out of the top tier.
No. 4: Walmart
Where we bought it: Walmart

Acme Chocolate Cupcakes - Photo by Yadi Rodriguez, cleveland.com
Price: $4.48
Servings in a pack: 6 cupcakes
Our Thoughts: A mixed bag in the best way budget cupcakes usually are. The cake was neither dry nor truly moist, and the frosting leaned very sweet, but the price is hard to ignore. Not a standout in flavor, but a solid option when cost matters most.

No. 3: Acme
Where we bought it: Acme
Price: $7.99

Servings in a pack: 6 cupcakes
Our Thoughts: A dependable, crowd-pleasing cupcake. The devil’s food-style cake stayed moist and flavorful, while the frosting was sweet without being overwhelming. Not flashy, but consistently enjoyable — and that earned it a top-three finish. This a solid middle-of-the-pack choice.

Price: $7.99

Chocolate cupcakes ranked: We tried grocery store cupcakes for National Chocolate Cake Day - Photo by Yadi Rodriguez, cleveland.com
Our Thoughts: One of the strongest performers in the lineup. Thick, smooth frosting with restrained sweetness sat atop a rich, moist chocolate cake. Well-balanced, indulgent and bakery-quality — it just missed the top spot.

No. 1: Meijer
Where we bought it: Meijer
Price: $9.99
Servings in a pack: 12 cupcakes
Our Thoughts: A surprise winner. The cupcakes are smaller, but the value is undeniable, with smooth, creamy frosting that isn’t cloying and a mild chocolate cake that works for a wide audience. The balance of flavor, texture and price pushed Meijer to the top — even if the frosting stains are a small price to pay.
Store bakery shelves, pre-packaged
These are the grab-and-go cupcakes — no pre-order required.
No. 8: Bake Shop bakery
Where we bought it: Aldi
Price: $3.49
Servings in a pack: 12 mini cupcakes
Our Thoughts: Sugar-overload frosting paired with a heavy, dry dark chocolate cake. Affordable, but not our go-to when a chocolate craving hits.
No. 7: Café Valley
Where we bought it: Sav a lot
Price: $3.50
Servings in a pack: 12 mini cupcakes
Our Thoughts: Pasty, overly sweet frosting and a dry, forgettable cake. Cheap, yes — memorable, no.
No. 6: favorite day bakery
Where we bought it: Target
Price: $4.49
Servings in a pack: 12 mini cupcakes
Our Thoughts: Perfectly average. Mild chocolate flavor with thick frosting. Fine in a pinch, but nothing that would bring us back.
No. 5: Trader Joe’s Gluten Free
Where we bought it: Trader Joe’s
Price: $3.99
Servings in a pack: 12 mini cupcakes
Our Thoughts: Very sweet, thick frosting paired with a cake that leaned dry. You wouldn’t guess they’re gluten-free — a plus — but they didn’t stand out.
No. 4: two-bite
Where we bought it: Dave’s
Price: $5.79
Servings in a pack: 12 mini cupcakes
Our Thoughts: The frosting was the standout — light and reminiscent of chocolate milk powder. The bite-sized cake, however, lacked richness and depth, it was just average.
No. 3: Whole Foods Market Kitchens
Where we bought it: Whole Foods
Price: $3.29
Servings in a pack: 1
Our Thoughts: A small cupcake with thick but restrained frosting and a moist cake with solid chocolate flavor. You’d never guess it was vegan — a genuinely pleasant surprise.
No. 2: Kimberley’s Bakeshoppe
Where we bought it: Lucky’s Market
Price: $6.49
Servings in a pack: 4
Our Thoughts: Mousse-like frosting with rich chocolate syrup flavor and chocolate chunks on top. The dark chocolate cake was moist with just a bit of crumble. Unapologetically chocolate-forward — and chocolate lovers will absolutely love this one.
No. 1: Whole Foods
Where we bought it: Whole Foods
Price: $4.29
Servings in a pack: 1
Our Thoughts: A big, bakery-style cupcake with light, whipped frosting and a chocolate drizzle. Delicious! Moist cake, balanced sweetness and rich flavor without going overboard. A chocolate lover’s must try. If only they came in multiple packs.
