The space felt lifeless: A homeowner transformed her 1879 kitchen with a modern pink makeover
A vintage-inspired kitchen? We love to see it. But a dated kitchen? Hard pass. Daniela Sanchez, founder of Rose House Talent Agency, had a kitchen that fell into the latter category; in fact, the room (sans appliances) was original to the 1879 home.
"‘Dated' would be an understatement," Daniela says of the original kitchen. "The layout did not flow, the dining room was closed off and very dark, and the same tile used on the floor was also used as the countertop. The cabinets were dark and heavy, the walls were a light yellow-beige, and overall the space felt lifeless. Every time you walked into the kitchen, it honestly felt like the energy was being sucked out of you."
To give it a much-needed update, Daniela reflected on her time spent abroad, where she fell in love with European-style kitchens. She appreciated "panel-ready appliances, hidden drawers, clean lines, and overall simplicity." Plus, she knew she wanted a pink island, which would act as the focal point.
Although Daniela had pretty much already dreamed up the new kitchen's layout, she worked with Amanda Hilton Interior Design to put it on paper and give suggestions (like the curved island!) and with Griffel's Custom to bring it to life. A wall between the kitchen and dining room was opened up, and all of the appliances and cabinets (painted with Benjamin Moore's Collingwood) were installed on one wall across from the island (painted with Benjamin Moore's Rose Silk).
The kitchen project was a part of a full six-month townhouse renovation, and it alone cost around $60,000 to complete. One thing that didn't need renovating? The south-facing windows that offer generous natural light, making the new space feel extra warm and inviting.
When asked what she loves most about the new kitchen, Daniela simply says: "Everything. There truly isn't one thing I would change. I love the space, the soft curved lines of the island and hood fan, and most importantly, the color and design. It feels perfect for our family."
