People are just realizing what Pringles are made of

If you have ever enjoyed a tube of Pringles before, you may be among the many who had no idea that you were enjoying 'chips' that aren't chips at all. Now, people also claim there's a 'correct' way to chow down on the snack. On a Reddit thread dedicated to unveiling little known facts, one user revealed that the brand's product is in fact not able to sold or classified as chips.

'Instead, they're dehydrated potato flakes pressed into their signature parabolic shape,' the user said. 'When other potato chip manufacturers complained, the FDA ruled that Pringles couldn't be marketed as chips. The company eventually settled on "potato crisp."' On the nutrition information for the tasty snack, the brand labeled a serving size as 'about 15 crisps'.

The ingredients of their Original flavored 'crisp' is said to be made up of 'dried potatoes, vegetable oil, degerminated yellow corn flour, cornstarch, rice flour, maltodextrin, mono-and diglycerides, salt and wheat starch,' according to the company website. Another user on Reddit noted that the company had been involved in a court case in the United Kingdom 'as to whether it was a crisp or not'.

'It was at one point ruled that, as it contained less than 50% potato and was formed into a shape, it was not a crisp and was more like a cake. […] This decision was later overturned, and Pringles are classified as crisps now.' However, many Pringles fans weren't swayed by the revelation. One user wrote: 'They could call them potato crackers if they want... they're still delicious!' 'Who cares they are addicting and delicious,' another commenter said. 'Them [expletive] still SLAP,' one exclaimed.

As the real contents of the tube came to light, other fans of the snack claimed there was a correct way to enjoy the potato crisps. A TikTok by cookinhungry , or Aaron, claimed to have discovered the correct way to eat a Pringle. 'Do you know there’s a correct way to eat Pringles? Most of us eat Pringles like this, we put the curved part on our mouth and just eat it like that, right?' Aaron then flipped the crisp over and said, because the seasonings are mostly on the top of the Pringle, that 'you’re actually supposed to it like this'.

'If you rub a Pringle, you can actually feel all the seasoning on this side,' he added. 'It's true and delicious,' one commented. 'Lol if that how we are suppose to eat them that's how they should have put them in the containers,' another rebutted. One user, however, said they found the opposite to be true. 'Wdym in my pringles they're flavored more on the bottom,' they said.

While not everyone in the comments were convinced, a spokesperson for the company told Metro: 'Many people think that Pringles are seasoned on both sides.' 'In fact, only the top side gets a sprinkling of seasoning in the factory,' the spokesperson added. When Pringles are stacked in their can, some of the seasoning rubs off onto the next chip – which is why they’ve always been a little uneven.' While users on social media can't seem to agree on a 'correct' method of eating the crisp, the Pringles website said there isn't one.

The brand's website, however, had a suggested method. 'There’s no wrong way to eat Pringles! However, some people claim that the best way to eat them is with the “top” of the chip (the side facing the lid of the can) facing down. 'Pringles typically have more seasoning on the top of the crisps than the bottom, so this way you get the most intense flavor experience,' the website said. The Daily Mail has reached out to the brand's parent company Kellanova for further comment.
