We tried 18 fast food breakfast sandwiches—and the winner is shocking

Everyone has a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich, claims to have the best coffee lineup, or thinks they have a deal worth setting an alarm for.

So I decided to put that to the test.

I visited nine major chains and ordered two sandwiches from each: their version of a classic bacon or sausage, egg, and cheese, plus whatever specialty breakfast item they were best known for. Some were excellent, and others made me question whether anyone involved had ever eaten breakfast.

Here’s how they ranked.

9. Dunkin’

First up, the good news: the Sausage, Egg & Cheese on a Croissant was delicious. The buttery croissant paired really nicely with the sausage without overwhelming the sandwich.

9. Dunkin’, 8. White Castle, 7. Taco Bell, 6. Burger King, 5. Starbucks, 4. McDonald’s, 3. Panera, 2. Wendy’s, 1. Chick-fil-A

Unfortunately, the Sourdough Breakfast Sandwich completely tanked Dunkin’s ranking. The bread wasn’t toasted, became soggy from the bacon and egg, and somehow managed to be both greasy and dry at the same time. It was also one of the heaviest sandwiches I tried, and not in a satisfying way.

9. Dunkin’, 8. White Castle, 7. Taco Bell, 6. Burger King, 5. Starbucks, 4. McDonald’s, 3. Panera, 2. Wendy’s, 1. Chick-fil-A

8. White Castle

The Bacon, Egg & Cheese Slider was fine, but forgettable. The Sausage, Egg & Cheese Slider worked much better with the extra thickness of the sausage patty, helping to balance everything out. Still, neither left much of an impression.

9. Dunkin’, 8. White Castle, 7. Taco Bell, 6. Burger King, 5. Starbucks, 4. McDonald’s, 3. Panera, 2. Wendy’s, 1. Chick-fil-A

7. Taco Bell

The Bacon Breakfast Quesadilla was a miss for me. The eggs were slightly dry, and the salt content had me reaching for water immediately afterward. It could have benefited from adding one of Taco Bell’s many delicious sauces to cut some of the eggs' dryness.

But the Sausage Breakfast Crunchwrap saved the day. The hash brown, creamy jalapeño sauce, and the optional breakfast salsa add a ton of flavor, and the format works surprisingly well for eating on the go. If you’re heading to Taco Bell for breakfast, this is the order.

9. Dunkin’, 8. White Castle, 7. Taco Bell, 6. Burger King, 5. Starbucks, 4. McDonald’s, 3. Panera, 2. Wendy’s, 1. Chick-fil-A

6. Burger King

The Bacon, Egg & Cheese Croissan’wich is solid. The croissant is small enough that it doesn’t overpower the fillings, and the bacon is impressively crisp.

9. Dunkin’, 8. White Castle, 7. Taco Bell, 6. Burger King, 5. Starbucks, 4. McDonald’s, 3. Panera, 2. Wendy’s, 1. Chick-fil-A

But the real surprise was the Egg-Normous Burrito. This thing is absurdly large and packed with bacon, eggs, cheese, hash browns, and a spicy sauce that really brought this over the edge.

5. Starbucks

Starbucks earned points for consistency.

The Bacon, Gouda & Egg Sandwich carried me through much of high school and college, and it’s still a dependable option. The Gouda adds a nice sharpness, though I wish the ciabatta had gotten a little crisper in the oven.

9. Dunkin’, 8. White Castle, 7. Taco Bell, 6. Burger King, 5. Starbucks, 4. McDonald’s, 3. Panera, 2. Wendy’s, 1. Chick-fil-A

The Egg Pesto Mozzarella was the biggest surprise. The baked cheese on top of the bread adds great texture, and the pesto brings far more flavor than most breakfast sandwiches on the market.

9. Dunkin’, 8. White Castle, 7. Taco Bell, 6. Burger King, 5. Starbucks, 4. McDonald’s, 3. Panera, 2. Wendy’s, 1. Chick-fil-A

4. McDonald’s

The Sausage Egg McMuffin is a classic for a reason.

9. Dunkin’, 8. White Castle, 7. Taco Bell, 6. Burger King, 5. Starbucks, 4. McDonald’s, 3. Panera, 2. Wendy’s, 1. Chick-fil-A

The freshly cracked egg tastes noticeably better than most competitors, and the sandwich remains one of the most balanced breakfast items in fast food.

And then there’s the Bacon, Egg & Cheese McGriddle. Sandwiched between what is essentially two syrup-soaked pancakes, I understand why people are obsessed with it. Sweet, savory, ridiculous—it shouldn’t work as well as it does.

9. Dunkin’, 8. White Castle, 7. Taco Bell, 6. Burger King, 5. Starbucks, 4. McDonald’s, 3. Panera, 2. Wendy’s, 1. Chick-fil-A

3. Panera

Panera had one of the biggest gaps between its two sandwiches.

The Bacon, Egg & Cheese on Ciabatta was perfectly fine, but didn’t do much to set itself apart from competitors.

9. Dunkin’, 8. White Castle, 7. Taco Bell, 6. Burger King, 5. Starbucks, 4. McDonald’s, 3. Panera, 2. Wendy’s, 1. Chick-fil-A

The Ham Croissant Benny, however, was outstanding. The sauce elevated the entire sandwich, the egg was fluffy and light, and the flavor felt noticeably more thoughtful than most of the competition. The croissant could be flakier, but that’s a minor complaint.

9. Dunkin’, 8. White Castle, 7. Taco Bell, 6. Burger King, 5. Starbucks, 4. McDonald’s, 3. Panera, 2. Wendy’s, 1. Chick-fil-A

2. Wendy’s

Wendy’s continues to be wildly underrated in the breakfast conversation.

The Bacon, Egg & Cheese Biscuit is excellent. The biscuit is flavorful without being dry, and every ingredient is balanced.

9. Dunkin’, 8. White Castle, 7. Taco Bell, 6. Burger King, 5. Starbucks, 4. McDonald’s, 3. Panera, 2. Wendy’s, 1. Chick-fil-A

The Breakfast Baconator is the complete opposite. It’s bigger, heavier, and significantly more indulgent. The sausage brought a ton of flavor, and it’s perfect for anyone who wants breakfast to feel like an event.

9. Dunkin’, 8. White Castle, 7. Taco Bell, 6. Burger King, 5. Starbucks, 4. McDonald’s, 3. Panera, 2. Wendy’s, 1. Chick-fil-A

1. Chick-fil-A

Chick-fil-A’s Bacon, Egg & Cheese Muffin featured the crispiest, most properly toasted English muffin I tried all day. That alone helped it stand out immediately.

9. Dunkin’, 8. White Castle, 7. Taco Bell, 6. Burger King, 5. Starbucks, 4. McDonald’s, 3. Panera, 2. Wendy’s, 1. Chick-fil-A

Then there was the Chicken, Egg & Cheese Biscuit, which I expected to dislike because chicken before noon feels mildly illegal.

9. Dunkin’, 8. White Castle, 7. Taco Bell, 6. Burger King, 5. Starbucks, 4. McDonald’s, 3. Panera, 2. Wendy’s, 1. Chick-fil-A

I was wrong—the chicken worked shockingly well. The biscuit was flavorful and not dry, easily the best one I tried.

By the end of the tasting, Chick-fil-A was the only chain where both sandwiches were exceptional. And that’s ultimately what separated it from the rest of the pack.
