'Never would have imagined': Chloe Fisher's hope after years of heartbreak

After years of fertility struggles, Chloe Fisher's biggest dream finally came true when she welcomed her daughter Bobbi last year.

The journey to their baby girl's arrival included four miscarriages, multiple rounds of IVF, several surgeries and even the beginning stages of a surrogacy process, so Chloe and her husband DJ Paul Fisher were shocked beyond belief when they learned they were expecting their second child just a year later.

"I never would have ever imagined that I would be in this position, but I'm going to take it as a blessing and a miracle."

Chloe admits "wrangling a toddler and a pregnancy is not for the faint-hearted", but she couldn't be more excited.

After everything she and Paul have been through, they truly can't believe they are preparing for baby number two.

It's a completely different mindset to that of a younger Chloe, who assumed the process would be "easy".

Chloe and Paul's journey to welcoming their first daughter was challenging.

Thinking back to that version of herself – who knew she wanted to be a mother more than anything but had no clue just how difficult it would be to become one – Chloe says she "had no idea what she was about to endure".

Chloe admits she went into trying for a baby "quite naive" and assumed the journey to motherhood would be simple.

Now, looking back on her past self with sympathy, she wishes she had been better-equipped for what was in store.

"I just wish I knew more about how it all worked. When you look at the bigger picture, you realise, it isn't actually that easy [to fall pregnant]," Chloe says, noting just how common infertility struggles and miscarriages are.

A younger Chloe assumed the process of becoming a mother would be quite simple.

But that was far from the reality.

According to Miscarriage Australia, up to one in four pregnancies will end in miscarriage affecting over 100,000 hopeful parents every year in Australia alone.

It can also be incredibly isolating with conversations around miscarriage and infertility still difficult to broach for many.

"Every five minutes in Australia, a family is affected by the early loss of a pregnancy," Isabelle Orderberg, Chair of the Early Pregnancy Loss Coalition said in a 2024 Ministry of Health media release titled Breaking The Silence on Miscarriage

"For too long this issue has been shrouded in shame and stigma, leading to isolation and compromised care, both medical and in mental health."

Chloe has experienced this first hand and wants to see the stigma reduced and conversations about fertility struggles bolstered.

"It should be something that you can talk about to your neighbour, your work colleague, your boss or your family without feeling ashamed," Chloe says.

It is partly for this reason that Choe decided to write her memoir Always You

By laying out her story on the pages, she hopes to help others in similar situations feel less alone.

"I'm not the only person who has gone through this so I wanted to do something that was going to be more of a handbook," she says.

Chloe has poured her heart into more than 300 pages, telling the story of her life so far – from her upbringing in Sydney's Northern Beaches, to her and her husband's whirlwind love story and her blended family dynamic with best friend Ellidy Pullin, who lost partner Alex 'Chumpy' Pullin in a spearfishing incident, and Ellidy's daughter Minnie.

She also put pen to paper to detail her upsetting IVF journey, her harrowing birth story where she was rushed into emergency surgery moments after welcoming Bobbi into the world due to a postpartum haemorrhage and her battle with postpartum depression.

The book touches on Chloe's blended family dynamic with her best friend Ellidy Pullin.

Peppered among the personal anecdotes are a number of resources, including expert information on miscarriage from the Pink Elephants Support Network and advice for navigating grief, to help readers navigate their own struggles.

"I did like that I was able to add that to the book to give it more depth instead of just being my story," she says.

It's a resource Chloe wishes she had when she was in the thick of her own fertility journey.

"It would have given me hope and it would have been really helpful," she says.

"Hopefully this is a big book of advice for anyone that's really struggling."

She may not have had a guidebook of her own as she navigated the highs and lows of her fertility journey, but Chloe looks back with pride.

"I'm so strong and I'm so resilient and although, at times, I didn't think I was going to make it through and I did not see light at the end of the tunnel, I really did have to believe in myself," she says.

"I'm so proud of that girl that just kept on pushing and kept saying, 'I don't know how it's going to happen but it will happen'."
