Smoky, juicy, and unapologetically stacked — the pastrami sandwich is a deli classic that never disappoints.
The food website recently published their list of the best pastrami sandwiches you can find in the United States. Featured on the list was longtime Jersey classic eatery Hobby’s Delicatessen and Restaurant in Newark.

Here’s what the website said about the Newark deli:
“Hobby’s Delicatessen has won so much praise that even hardcore Manhattanites may make the trek out to New Jersey for this gem. Celebrated as one of the nation’s best Jewish delis, and the hot pastrami sandwich as the very best, Hobby’s has been run by the same family for decades. Order the high-stacked pastrami with your choice of bread and condiments, and even extra meat if you dare. We recommend keeping your first try simple to really focus on the pastrami’s rich flavor.”

The website also raved about the “Big Sexy” version of the sandwich, with more than a pound of pastrami along the option to add turkey or corned beef.
This is hardly the first praise for Hobby’s Deli. Food and Wine named them as one of the best Jewish delis in America in 2022 and travel site Far & Wide also said they were one of the best pastrami spots in the U.S. in 2024.
NJ.com has also highlighted Hobby’s on several best-of lists. Their pastrami sandwich took the No. 4 spot on the best sandwiches in New Jersey list and was crowned the No. 1 Jewish deli in th estate.
Hobby’s has been run by the Brummer family since 1962. Beyond pastrami, Hobby’s also offers soups, latkes, knishes, reubens, cheesesteaks, wraps, salads and more.
