They used to be as common as corner stores and post offices.

Just about every town in North Jersey had its own nightclub, where dance spaces were perpetually crammed and where vodka drinks cost no more than $1.50.

This is a tribute to 99 of the most well-known venues in this area, focusing on the 1970s through the 1990s. Each entry has a different street address. The Record and NorthJersey.com compiled the names by researching archives and by talking to people with direct ties to the club scene. The list covers Bergen, Essex, Morris and Passaic counties, with multiple nominations for small cities, like Clifton and Hackensack, and an appearance by one of the tiniest suburbs in the Garden State.

This dinner theater and later disco was reborn as a Macedonian Orthodox church in May 2004. A celebration to consecrate the new house of worship was attended by more than 2,000 people.

There are no traces of this roadhouse. The state reconfigured the junction of routes 20 and 46 as part of a multimillion-dollar project in September 1997, and the property where it once stood was in the path.

Northern Valley meets the tropics at this unique place that offered dancing and Hawaiian smorgasbords until it reopened as a Chinese restaurant in June 1992. A real estate developer later acquired the property to build single-family homes.

This legendary club was destroyed in a fast-moving fire that also displaced nearly two dozen residents from an adjacent boardinghouse in August 2004. A row of townhomes now occupies the corner property.

A legal dispute between the township and this nightspot on a former farm ended in March 1975 as its owners agreed to change its name to something less suggestive of drug paraphernalia. It burned down within three years.

Moored to the Hudson River shoreline, this ferryboat was already pushing 70 years old when it opened as a luxury dining hall with an after-hours club in July 1975. Crews dismantled the historic vessel eight years ago.

There must be a story behind that name: Known as Club Rochelle, this establishment — now a chain steakhouse — was branded with its fabled moniker after a tractor-trailer crashed there in July 1973.

Famous for live music and steak sandwiches, this popular hangout beat the pandemic and outlasted everyone else on the list. It closed in October 2023 after its family owner sold the highway property for a reported $3 million.

Seven partners converted the Lanman & Kemp plant, where hair tonics and scented soaps were made, into this discothèque in October 1975. The multi-story building is now a fitness studio, a Korean restaurant and a liquor store.
