In 1961, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy began the tradition of selecting a theme for the official White House Christmas tree, according to whitehousehistory.org.
The first theme that year was Nutcracker Suite.
"First ladies have primarily overseen the holiday decorations throughout the house, as well as the trimming of the official Christmas tree on the State Floor," whitehousehistory.org said.
