Christmas classics and nostalgic favourites: Baby names for girls and boys inspired by the festive season
It's the most wonderful time of the year.

Christmas and the festive season could be the unlikely place where your ideal baby name inspiration is hiding.
Whether you're wanting to go down a traditional route with names, looking towards religious history, or a more modern and fun option for a name, Christmas actually has a lot to offer in terms of name ideas.
While some of the options are a bit obvious, which are honestly perfect if you're a lover of Christmas, or have a special connection to the day, others give a more subtle nod to the festive season.
Some people might think it's a bit on the nose to name your child
Christmas inspired girl names
Clara: When it comes to Christmas traditions, for many families The Nutcracker is a part of it.
The ballet from 1892, scored by Tchaikovsky, is beloved by many for its tale of Clara, a young girl who befriends a nutcracker who comes to life on Christmas Eve. A fitting name for a baby girl born around this time of year, or a nod to the classic story.
Holly: For those who want something that is very Christmassy, but not too obvious, Holly is a lovely choice.
The association is biblical, as holly is said to represent Christ's crown of thorns (the red being emblematic of blood). But the green leaves surrounding the holly are also said to be symbolic of life after death.
But for many the association will be the popular Christmas carol Deck the Halls.
In 2025, fans of Stranger Things are counting down for the next installment of the final season – of course wondering what fate awaits for Holly, adding a sci-fi touch to the moniker.
Ivy: Another nature-inspired Christmas name, the plant is associated with Christmas as it's green year-round. It's a perfect option for parents who are looking for a nod to the festive season, without going too obvious.
Joy: OK so this one may be a bit too much for some, but it's also a perfect middle name option. Obviously most people will instantly think, Joy to the World, but it really is a short and sweet name,
Mary: Perhaps one of the strongest Christmas names, Mary is an enduringly popular girl's name, which explains why it remains so timeless.
Derived from the ancient Hebrew name Miriam, it means 'beloved' or 'rebellious'. Mary was the virgin mother, said to have given birth to Jesus on Christmas Day and adds a very traditional nod to the day.

From traditional religious inspired names to more modern nickname ideas, the festive season has a lot to offer.
Natalie: Natalie (and Natalia) is derived from Latin and means 'birth of the Lord' or 'Christmas Day'.
Rudy: For the parents who want something a little bit more unique, add Rudy to your list.
As a standalone name it doesn't really have a Christmassy meaning, but could be used as a nickname for Rudolph.
It's a lovely unisex option too. While it is traditionally more of a boys name, it's what Hamish Blake and Zoe Foster Blake went with for their daughter.
Christmas inspired boy names
Buddy: For the parents who are far from traditional, nickname names are a perfect option, and you can't go past Buddy.
Now, wondering where the Christmas vibes come in? That's of course Buddy, from the iconic movie Elf. Oh, there's also Buddy Holly too.
Clarence: For the mums and dads too be who are all about the classics, consider Clarence. He was George's guardian angel in Christmas classic It's a Wonderful Life.
But the name is also from the Latin clarus, meaning 'bright', which adds another Christmas note.
Gabriel: Another option is to name your baby after the angel sent to tell Mary she'd soon have baby Jesus. The name is of Hebrew origins which means 'man of God'.
Joseph: And rounding out the traditional Christmas names, we have Joseph, said to be the father of Jesus. Again, a name rooted in religious meaning, but a timeless classic.
Nicholas: OK so no one is going to go as bold as naming their baby boy Santa, but this is a way to do it on the down-low.
For those who love the big day, opt for Nicholas, obviously a nod to good old Saint Nicholas.

Why not go with the more subtle nod to the big guy himself, and pick Nicholas for your son?
Jasper: Now, you're not alone if you're wondering where Jasper fits into Christmas, and it's another biblical nod to the origins of the day.
The name, which is of Persian origin, means Treasurer and is said to have been the name of one of the three wise men who brought gifts to Jesus in the manger.
Noel: The name Noel is of French origin and means "Christmas" or "born on Christmas". It derives from the Latin word natalis, meaning "birth," and has been traditionally given to children born during the Christmas season since the 12th century.
Surprisingly, another lovely unisex option, if you opt for the spelling Noelle for a girl.
So, with so much festive inspiration out there, it might be the perfect place to consider for baby name ideas – and we think they are all great options for the "nice" list.
