Best way to get rid of a Christmas tree in Delaware is by recycling

Another holiday season has come and gone, and its time for the Christmas tree to find a new life outside of your living room.

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control wants you to bring your tree to the Delaware Center for Horticulture in Wilmington on Jan. 10 for TreeCycle. After you drop off your tree, it will go through a wood chipper and become organic materials for the organization to use around the city. The event is from from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m..

Can't make it to that event? You may not have to get in your car. Some municipalities and garbage pickup services offer Christmas tree pickup on the curb. Call to verify that with your hauler before putting it out there, however.

There is a statewide ban on yard waste in regular waste containers.

There are numerous other places in Delaware for people to drop off a Christmas tree: There are multiple drop-off sites in each county in Delaware, which can be found at dnrec.delaware.gov/waste-hazardous/yard-waste/drop-off-sites/.

Make sure to remove any decorations like ornaments, and artificial trees cannot be accepted.

DNRE reports that 156,600 tons of yard waste were recycled in 2024 in Delaware. The agency said before the ban, the waste would take up space in landfills instead of being used for mulch and composting.
