Exhibit honors life, legacy of Robert Cazimero

Ke Kilo Lani showcases the life and legacy of revered kumu hula and music legend Robert Cazimero.

KĀNEʻOHE (HawaiiNewsNow) - An exhibit honoring one of Hawaiʻi’s most renowned kumu hula and musicians opened Friday in Windward Oʻahu.

Ke Kilo Lani, located in Gallery ʻIolani at Windward Community College, showcases Robert Cazimero’s lifelong commitment to the continuity of Hawaiian cultural practice and knowledge.

The installation includes Cazimero’s award-winning albums and family photos showing the lineage of the Hawaiian Music Hall-of-Famer.

Cazimero has won more than two dozen Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards and led his all-male Hālau Nā Kamalei o Līlīlehua to two overall wins at the Merrie Monarch Festival.

Now 76 years old, Cazimero is reflecting on his more than half a century in entertainment.

“This is really helping me to kind of try and figure out what is important to hold on to and what is meant to be passed on,” he told Hawaii News Now.

Photos adorning the walls reflect the people, past and present, who impacted Cazimero’s life.

“I love to be here by myself, because then I play my piano and it’s like they all come off the walls. And you can hear, to me, I hear their voices and I see them talking, and I just dig it,” he added.

Ke Kilo Lani will be on display through May 15. The gallery will host guided tours, talk story sessions, and hula performances.

Gallery ʻIolani is open Monday through Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. and is closed Sundays and holidays.
