The best country bakeries across WA, according to a pastry-obsessed West Aussie

No douth trip (‘douth’ being the widely used Perth version of ‘down south’) is complete without a trip to Margaret River Bakery. Beloved by road trippers and locals alike, this South West institution has been baking incredible pastries and bread for decades now. Its croissants, cinnamon scrolls and sandwiches are all particular standouts, but everything is delicious. Don’t be deterred by the queues; get in there, load up and enjoy your goodies in the sunshine.

Located west of Esperance in Pink Lake, Bread Local is the place of your pastry dreams. This artisan bakery has built a real name for itself thanks to its incredible sourdough loaves, delicious sweet slices, savoury scrolls and tasty toasties. Enjoy Bread Local’s incredible baked goodies picnic-style in its surrounding gardens or fuel up at the bakery’s more grab-and-go-style downtown location on Dempster Street.

Anyone from the Perth Hills and beyond knows about Bindoon Bakehaus. This classic country bakery is a must-visit for all those passing through the Chittering Valley, and bakes some incredible pies, sausage rolls and, most notably, a banoffee eclair, which was supposedly Prince Harry’s treat of choice when he stopped by back in 2015.

Pie lovers, do yourself a favour and pay a visit to Mount Barker Country Bakery. This iconic country bakery has won awards for its pies, with its beef bourguignon pie winning gold at the Great Aussie Pie competition. If you have more of a sweet tooth, you’re well looked after here too; be sure to try one of the bakery’s delicious donuts.

Down in Albany, you’ll find incredible beaches, nature trails and some seriously delicious French-style pastries. Owned by French pastry chef Tiffany Peyre, La Patisserie 1931 is a phenomenal little bakery housed within an old cottage. Indulge in perfect little tarts, Paris Brest, eclairs and more, all within an elegant, pink-hued setting overlooking the ocean – and make sure to keep an eye out for Jean-Pierre, La Patisserie’s adorable resident bandicoot.

Another essential pit stop on any South West road trip is Dunsborough Bakery. Here you’ll find classic pies, sausage rolls, donuts, croissants and more, all within easy reach of the beach – sounds like a perfect day to me.

One of the best bakeries, if not the best, in the Wheatbelt has to be Toodyay Bakery. Located right in the heart of the Avon Valley town, this classic country bakery is the place to go for award-winning pies, pasties and sausage rolls. In terms of sweets, Toodyay Bakery makes a great apple pie and tasty jam and cream donuts.

Pinjarra Bakery has been providing West Aussies with fantastic, award-winning pies for over 25 years now. The WA franchise began with its Pinjarra flagship (there are now two other locations in Maddington and Port Kennedy), which is another great bakery pit stop for those heading south from Perth, or ‘douth’ as you now know.

Drive just 40 or so minutes north-east of Perth, and you’ll be greeted by rolling hills, native bushland and some of the best country pies and pastries courtesy of Gidgegannup Bakery. Standouts include the classic steak pie, the Ned Kelly pie, vanilla slice and fruit danishes.

Situated near Busselton, Claudio Bakehouse brings together Italian and French pastry techniques thanks to its owners, Claudio and Filomena. Be sure to try one of their buttery croissants – of which there are some incredible varieties – and delicious focaccia.
