Kalamazoo brewery hosts local beer history presentation

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — On Thursday, visitors to Brewery Outré in Kalamazoo can attend a free presentation on the city’s nearly 200 years of local beer history during the annual Kalamazoo Craft Beverage Week.

“It’s a fun way to connect with the brewing community and the Kalamazoo culture,” said Ted Linabury, owner at Brewery Outré.

Led by Keith Howard, a former professor and current digital preservation specialist at the Kalamazoo Public Library, attendees will learn more about how Kalamazoo embraced local brewing before and after prohibition through archived photographs and historical architecture.

“The best-known, larger Kalamazoo brewery was called City Union,” Linabury said. “That building actually stood until a few years ago.”

At Brewery Outré, which opened almost four years ago, Linabury looks forward to continuing to offer informative, educational events for brewing enthusiasts, including presentations from local mead-makers and amateur brewers.

“Every month we’ve got something going on like that,” Linabury said.

Howard’s presentation on brewing history in Kalamazoo will begin at 6 p.m. and will last approximately one hour. Reservations to the event can be made online.
