Pizzerias raising money for food insecurity in Colorado for National Pizza Day
Three iconic pizzerias on Main Street in Longmont are partnering together this week to raise funds to go toward ending hunger for families in Colorado in coordination with National Pizza Day on Monday.
Now through Feb. 15, Urban Field Pizza, Rosalee’s Pizzeria and Antonio’s Real New York Pizza will be donating $1 for every cheese or pepperoni pizza sold to the national nonprofit Slice Out Hunger.
“I think it’s just time to, you know, come together. Come together for something we can all enjoy. Pizza is inarguably good,” Urban Field Pizza co-founder and CEO Paul Nashak told FOX31 in an interview last week.
Nashak and Urban Field Pizza Co-Founder and Culinary Director Nick Swanson partnered with the other Longmont pizzerias to form the new Colorado nonprofit Pizza With Purpose after seeing how much of an impact the community felt with the recent lack of SNAP benefits.
Each of the pizzerias found ways to help the local community during that time, like the Pasta for the People program at Urban Field, which fed some 170 families within 9 days.
“The early stages of just trying to get involved in helping our neighbors was so successful and heartening and everyone was so energized about it, that we decided to stay together for this nonprofit,” Nashak said.
This week’s fundraiser will be the first of many for the new nonprofit. On Saturday, Sept. 5, Pizza With Purpose will host the first-ever Colorado Pizza Festival, inviting attendees to join the celebration with live music, local breweries and local pizzerias, all while raising funds to help the community.
