Oregon City’s newest grocery fits in just 600 square feet. Here’s what’s inside

A grand opening was held Wednesday, March 4, for Oregon City Market, a new micro-grocery in a 600-square-foot space in downtown Oregon City.

The Oregon City Market has opened in the 600-square-foot space at 610 Main St., Suite A. (Don’t let the address confuse you, the entrance is on Sixth Street.)

Calling the store a “micro-grocer,” co-owners Jana Daisy-Ensign and husband, Tim Ensign, said they plan to stock a mix of local and regional specialty foods, alcoholic beverages and everyday essentials.

Shoppers can find everything from high-end organic items to quick eats like ramen noodles and pre-packaged snacks. Coolers carry grab-and-go sandwiches and wraps ranging from about $2.50 to $7.

Both Ensigns have experience in the craft beverages industry – Jana still works for the Northwest Cider Association – so the shop offers a well-curated selection of regional and international wines, beers and ciders.

“Our vision is a small grocery store with a thoughtful mix of fresh, local products at everyday prices,” Tim Ensign said in an announcement about the opening. “It’s a place where you can pop in for milk, shop for dinner, or connect with friends. We’re reviving the small town neighborhood market that existed before big box stores.”

The store carries staples like bread, milk and pasta, along with essentials such as toothbrushes, toiletries, paper towels and aspirin.

“We needed a little concierge shop downtown,” said Mayor Denyse McGriff during a Wednesday ribbon cutting hosted by the Oregon City Chamber of Commerce. “Somebody might need an aspirin, somebody might need a sandwich, somebody might need a drink. If you’re in a hurry, you can come in here and grab something.”

With more residential development planned for downtown Oregon City, a small grocery is a welcome addition, Chamber of Commerce speakers said. The store is also just a quick Municipal Elevator ride down from the McLoughlin neighborhood along Singer Hill.

The space previously housed TrueBizy toys and collectibles, which has expanded into the larger storefront next door at 610 Main St., Suite B.

The owners plan to host regular tastings at the shop. Alchemy Cider Co. will offer tastings from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, followed by Level Beer from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, and salsa tasting with Hot Mama Salsa from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, March 6-8.

“We love the farmers markets. We love supporting small businesses and small independent makers,” Daisy-Ensign said. “When we travel, we always look for those little independent general stores, the neighborhood market. When you shop those kinds of places, it feels special. Not cookie cutter. It feels like something where you get a little thumbprint from the actual location, and we aim to do that here.”
