Small towns have always been special. There’s a reason they appear in the choruses of country songs and the backdrops of Hallmark movies—they have a magic that can sometimes be hard to define. What is it that makes these pockets of Southern life so unforgettable? Some may say it’s the sun-dappled streets lined with historic homes or the apple orchards hugging the scenic railway. The reasons may vary, but the beauty is always in the details. From gorgeous scenery to cultural depth, these reader-selected small towns continue to stand out as the South’s Best.

An online survey was conducted by third-party agency Proof Insights among Southern Living consumers, asking them to rate their favorite places across the South. The survey was fielded from July 9 to September 9, 2025, and had over 17,000 respondents.
