Parks employee opens taped-up box and finds tiny faces staring back at him
It was a cold day in Killeen, Texas, when a parks and recreation employee stationed at a local park recently noticed a taped-up box abandoned in the grass.
The concerned municipal worker hurried over and tore open the box. There, huddled inside, were six defenseless puppies.
The man cleaned up the dogs and brought them to Killeen Animal Services. Rescue team members couldn’t believe it. A deep freeze was on the way; it was a miracle that the puppies were found in time.
Experienced rescue staff quickly got to work.
“[O]ur team jumped into action, assessing each puppy, feeding them and setting them up with warmth and care,” Killeen Animal Services wrote.
The pups were flea-ridden, hungry and dehydrated, and the smallest among them was very weak. Rescuers found a foster home for the littlest dog, where he could receive extra-vigilant care. The others traveled to one of the shelter’s trusted rescue partners.
Safe in foster care, the weakest puppy formed a tight bond with his temporary family. Soon, it became clear that they couldn’t part.
The puppy wasn’t visiting — he was home.
“We often struggle to get enough dogs adopted from the shelter, so to know the pup was adopted into a loving home was so comforting,” Kristen Blizard, of Killeen Animal Services, told The Dodo.
One by one, the other puppies found permanent families too, all thanks to the dedicated rescuers advocating on their behalf.
“This story began with cruelty and neglect, but it did not end there,” Killeen Animal Services wrote. “Because of quick action and teamwork, six tiny lives were given a second chance. We are endlessly grateful for every helping hand involved.”
