The $1 'underrated gem' from Aldi that's flying off shelves: 'Don't tell anyone'

  • Aussie shoppers have praised a bargain food find sold at Aldi Australia
  • Tins of Snack 'N' Go flavoured legumes cost only 99 cents each

A healthy Aldi Australia food buy that costs less than a dollar has been heralded by shoppers as an 'underrated gem'.

A regular shopper let the cat out of the bag by revealing one of their all-time favourite Aldi products in an online discussion forum post.

The food find? The Snack 'N' Go tinned range of flavoured legumes.

'The 99c a tin Snack 'N' Go [range] is one of my fave Aldi items – perfect for a mid-morning snack at work to give you a bit of energy,' the shopper enthused.

There are currently four varieties to choose from, all coming in a 70g tin: Black Beans Lime and Herbs with Corn, Chick Peas with Olive Oil, Garlic & Rosemary, Chick Peas with Zesty Vinaigrette, and Red Kidney Beans with Chilli & Olive Oil.

The unexpected praise for the budget-friendly item quickly attracted replies from other Aldi shoppers, who agreed this buy was a steal.

'They're so handy for lunch,' raved one person.

'I love these! Such an easy way to add a flavourful, veg-based protein into lunches,' agreed another.

An Aldi Australia shopper declared the Snack 'N' Go tinned range of flavoured legumes, which cost $0.99 each, an 'underrated gem'

'Completely agree. I'm a truck driver and these are such brilliant food for me,' another added.

One person even joked that they'd been trying to gatekeep this Aldi item so it doesn't become too popular, replying: 'Shhhh. Don't tell anyone.'

But another fan of the legume range was happy the secret they'd long known was out, replying: 'Happy chickpea snacking, friends!'

An Aldi Australia spokesperson told Daily Mail that the budget-friendly Snack 'N' Go range offers both convenience and nutrition.

'Packed full of great taste and wholesome ingredients, good for the mind, body, and the budget. The 99c New Season Snack 'N' Go range is the perfect go-to pick up as you run out the door,' the spokesperson said.

Several Aldi shoppers also chimed in to the recent post with serving suggestions for incorporating the flavoured tinned legumes into their meals.

'I like mixing these in with quinoa or rice and adding cherry tomatoes to turn it into a meal or salad,' one person offered.

A uni student explained that their go-to was the kidney bean mix, which they liked to add to a tuna rice bowl – saying it's 'sooo yummy!'

One creative suggestion was: 'I mix mine with tuna and cottage cheese, and sometimes add Nando's peri peri sauce as well.'

Although many replies came from mega fans of the bargain tinned range, a few griped that buying a full-size tin of plain chickpeas offered far better value.

'Insanely expensive compared to tins of plain chickpeas though,' one person argued.

'That costs the same price as an entire tin of chickpeas from Aldi,' another complained. 'All you have to do is add a splash of lemon juice and salt.'

However, these grumbles were countered by Snack 'N' Go fans, who explained that they're 'happy to pay the convenience tax' because it makes lunch 'super easy' and 'absolutely delicious'.

'People know they can save money  with stuff like this, [but] they don't want to, hence why they've bought a smaller pre-packed, pre-portioned, pre-seasoned product,' one reply explained. 'Some people value their free time over their money and that's okay.'

But, the liveliest debate in response to the recent Reddit thread centred on whether the Aldi Snack 'N' Go range stacked up as a worthy 'dupe' to the pricier Edgell range of Snack Time tinned flavoured legumes.

'I didn't know about these! My boyfriend loves the Edgell brand at Woolies and they're $1.60 each,' one person replied.

Several shoppers have done a comparison between the Aldi range of flavoured legume tins and Edgell's Snack Time range, which boasts a wider variety of options and costs around $1.60 per tin

A few replies explained that they'd conducted their own taste-test analysis of the Edgell range compared to the Aldi version and had a clear verdict.

'Honestly, they aren't as nice as the Edgell ones,' one claim

'These [Snack 'N' Go tins] are ok but not as nice. But beans in general are awesome and help hit your fibre goals much easier.'

The Edgell Snack Time range is sold at major supermarkets like Coles and Woolworths, and boasts a wider variety with 11 products currently available.

This includes Chickpeas with Olive Oil and Sea Salt, Black Beans, Capsicum and Charred Corn with Zesty Salsa, and Red Kidney Beans with Chilli Olive Oil.

Meanwhile, an Australian dietitian recently named the Snack 'N' Go canned range among her top nutritional finds stocked at Aldi supermarkets.

Practising dietitian Jess Burvill recently posted a list of the 'absolute treasure trove of budget-friendly staples and solid dupes of big-name brands' available at Aldi stores – with the Snack 'N' Go tinned legumes range among her picks.

Just as others had noted on Reddit, Jess observed: 'These are a good dupe of the Edgell Snack Time range available in major supermarkets.'

The health coach said: 'I always have a stash of these in the cupboard and they're perfect for throwing into lunch salads.'

'One can add around 5g of protein and 4g of fibre, plus you get extra flavour from the dressing.'
