“Not Dead Yet! John Cleese and the Holy Grail at 50” will stop Sunday, Sept. 28, at Peabody Auditorium in Daytona Beach, where the legendary Monty Python member will host a golden anniversary screening of the film and take questions about it from the audience.
Released by EMI Films in the United States on April 28, 1975, the project marked the first original feature film for Monty Python, the legendary British comedy troupe best known at the time for the BBC sketch series “Monty Python’s Flying Circus.”
Along with Cleese, the troupe consisted of Graham Chapman, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones and Michael Palin. Co-directed by Gilliam and Jones, “Holy Grail” features the late Chapman as King Arthur in his farcical quest for the mythical relic.
On the tour, Cleese makes a point to emphasize just how little the Monty Python collaborators knew about what they were doing during the film’s production, he said in a recent phone interview with The News-Journal.
“When we made the film, we didn’t know what we were doing. That’s the main thing I want to explain to the audiences,” he said. “We threw away 90% of the first draft. Then, we finally got on to what it was about.”
"Not Dead Yet! John Cleese and the Holy Grail at 50" will unfold at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, at Peabody Auditorium, 600 Auditorium Blvd., Daytona Beach.
