Jeni’s ice cream product recalled over potentially life-threatening allergen: What to know

(WHTM) – A batch of ice cream bars produced by a popular national brand has been recalled due to an undisclosed and potentially “life-threatening” ingredient.

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams is voluntarily recalling one lot of Passion Fruit Dreamsicle Ice Cream Bars with may contain undeclared wheat and soy, according to a recall notice issued by Jeni’s. The company said a component from a separate product — a “crunch topping” — may have been accidentally incorporated into the recalled bars, resulting in the undeclared ingredients.

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to soy and/or wheat run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume these products,” Jeni’s wrote.

Jeni’s said the affected ice cream bars were sold in 3-pack cartons or 8-pack cases, and were printed with a batch code reading “25-210.” This is “the only lot of Jeni’s products affected,” according to the company.

A representative for Jeni’s was unable to confirm how many ice cream bars, or cartons, were contained in the lot. The company said its Passion Fruit Dreamsicle Ice Cream Bars are sold nationwide.

Customers in possession of the recalled ice cream bars can return “the unopened or unfinished” boxes to their place of purchase for a refund, or contact Jeni’s at 614-488-3224 with additional questions.

Despite the recall, Jeni’s said no reports of adverse reactions had been reported as of Wednesday.

“We are extremely proud of our Passion Fruit Dreamsicle [bar] and the positive response they have received from customers,” the company writes in an FAQ section. “We look forward to continuing to bring this exciting new novelty experience to grocery stores nationwide.”
