Local ice cream shops prepare for National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day

Meltdown Ice Cream & Soda Parlor will be serving specialty breakfast themed desserts.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) -Local ice cream shops are preparing for National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day on Feb. 7, offering breakfast-inspired flavors and special events to celebrate the quirky holiday.

The event, celebrated on the first Saturday in February, encourages Americans to ditch their traditional breakfasts in favor of ice cream. Local participants include Meltdown Ice Cream and Soda Parlor and Chaney’s Dairy Barn.

“Legend has it. It started in the 1960s by a mom in New York and who has six kids and they were snowed in and she was just looking for something fun to keep the kids occupied and had ice cream for breakfast. The next year they were snowed in and the kids reminded her. Hey, we had ice cream for breakfast last year and so they kept it going and that’s where the tradition started,” said Susan Warrell, owner of Meltdown.

Major event for local shops

Warrell said the event is one of the largest of the year for her shop.

“For us, I’ve done ice cream for breakfast day, even back in my farmers market days. And we’ve done this since the shop has opened,” she said. “The ice cream shops across the country really like to celebrate that now. It’s a lot of fun. We’re coming out of our winter cold, slow season. Some shops close for the winter and it’s their opening, their kickoff weekend. And it just is a really, it’s a, it’s a fun boost for our staff and for the community.”

The day comes after a rough January for Meltdown. Warrell said business in the winter for her store is usually slow, but the recent winter storm has negatively affected business.
