Galveston's Dickens on The Strand returns this weekend. Here's what to know

Galveston's Dickens on The Strand returns this weekend, transforming the Strand Historic District into a Victorian-era celebration. Now in its 52nd year, the festival brings Charles Dickens' characters, costumed performers, parades and holiday programming to several blocks of downtown. Here's what to know before you go.

Dickens on The Strand is Galveston Historical Foundation's long-running holiday festival, designed to evoke the atmosphere of 19th-century London. The event pairs the island's preserved Victorian architecture with character portrayals, costumed vendors and period-inspired food and drink. The festival is presented in partnership with the British Consulate General Houston, reflecting its historical and cultural ties to the United Kingdom.

The festival runs Dec. 5-7, beginning Friday evening with Fezziwig's Beer Hall, a free kickoff event from 5 to 9 p.m. Programming continues through Saturday and Sunday with parades, live music, vendor markets, costumed performers and themed gatherings.

The event fills several blocks of the Strand and Mechanic National Historic Landmark District. The festival grounds stretch between 20th and 25th streets, with stages, vendor areas, pubs, children's attractions and historical demonstrations set throughout the walkable district.

General admission is $27.45 for adults plus fees. Youth ages 7–12 are $20.10, and children 6 and under are free. Visitors in full Victorian attire receive half off admission at the gate. Additional ticketed programs, including teas, concerts and specialty gatherings, are available at separate prices.

Festivalgoers can expect daily parades, including the Queen's Parade and Pickwick's Lanternlight Parade, along with long-standing traditions such as the Whimsical Whisker Revue, the Victorian Costume Contest and the Dickens Bed Races. Live entertainment runs across four stages, featuring music, storytelling and historical reenactments. The vendor market offers food, warm drinks, holiday treats, handcrafted goods and Victorian-inspired merchandise. Local museums and businesses throughout the district also provide extended programming tied to the festival.

New additions for 2025 include Tiny Tim's Play Land, a children's activity space; the Shopkeeper Skills Village, highlighting traditional trades; and Artful Dodger's After Dark, a 21-and-up nighttime program at the Galveston Historic Seaport featuring firelight and aerial performances. Organizers have also expanded heritage demonstrations and added new character appearances and scenic elements throughout the festival. Charles Dickens' great-great-great-grandson, Oliver "Ollie" Dickens, will make appearances during the weekend.

Parking is available in paid street spaces throughout the area, along with several nearby garages. Garages at 21st and Market and at 25th and Harborside offer easy access to the festival grounds. Designated handicap parking is located between 22nd and 23rd on Market and on 20th Street between Strand and Mechanic.
