Cat with impressive fetch skills wins pet of the week
From a cat living longer than a feline’s average life span to puppies experiencing a food coma, this week’s pet stories kept us on the edge of our seats.
But the week wouldn’t be complete without seeing the pets from our Newsweek readers. Take a look at the latest “Pet of the Week” winner and finalists below.
Read through to the end to find out how you can enter your pet to be featured in an upcoming “Pet of the Week.”
Winner

This week’s winner is a 1-year-old cat, Miklo, who has some dogs wishing they could fetch as well.
Owners Domingo and Lydia Longoria rescued Miklo after he was found entangled in house insulation, abandoned by his mother. Since then, he’s been a silly and curious kitty who looks like a “distinguished gentleman” when he wears his favorite bow tie.
But it was Miklo’s love of fetch that captured our hearts. He started playing fetch when he was around 6 months old, and he’s been obsessed ever since, leaving the couple surprised and amused by Miklo’s impressive skill.
“As soon as we jiggle his toy, he’s mesmerized,” Lydia told Newsweek. “He stops in his tracks and tries to take it from us. That’s our cue to throw it so he can fetch it.”
Finalists

Our first finalist this week might not enjoy the shoutout; she’s a bit camera-shy.
Owner Daniel Wildeman told Newsweek that his dog, who has many names including Doggo, Pookie Bear, Luv, Bear and Mija, is a Labrador and Australian shepherd mix. She loves to give hugs and snuggles with Wildeman. He wants to share his fur baby, but the 6-year-old dog never lets him.
“She does not like me or anyone, for that matter, to take any photos of her,” he said. “She literally dodges them and moves and stubbornly does it on purpose. So I was able to get this one by taking a ton of pictures at once, and hiding my phone.”

On the flip side, Denise Nealy’s dog doesn’t mind the limelight, especially if it means wearing outfits. Her dog, Benji, is a 15-year-old Maltese who loves dressing up.
In the photo, Benji is rocking a festive sweater as he prepares himself for Santa coming next week. And when it’s not the holiday season, he’ll wear a gold chain and sunglasses.
“He’s my baby,” Denise said. “Very polite, well-mannered, couldn’t ask for a better boy.”

Last, but not least, is a cat named Jack.
As a proud grandparent, Harriet Varnado couldn’t help but show off the grandcat. Varnado told Newsweek that Jack was adopted after being bullied by the other cats in the litter.
“He is very sweet and loving,” she said. “He likes to sit on his stool to watch what is being done in the kitchen.”
