“We pretty much agree on everything, so there haven't been many bumps in the road,” Patricia told the Daily Press on Friday at the senior living community.
Pat smiled and nodded in agreement with his wife.
“We just get along so well," he said. "When that happens, you just go with the flow and everything turns out just fine.”
The celebration included a trio singing Christmas tunes, while residents took photos and enjoyed cake, margaritas and wine.
During the festivities, the Shamblins would occasionally lean into each other to share whispers, then smile and laugh.
Young love
The Shamblins met while in fourth grade in Arkansas, and dated on and off through middle school.
Pat dropped out of high school at 17 to join the military and was eventually stationed in New Jersey before being transferred to Germany.
After a few years overseas, Pat wrote to Patricia, and they started a correspondence that continued throughout his deployment.
Loved ones stated that when Pat returned from his Army deployment in Germany, Patricia was waiting at the bus station with a marriage license in hand. The couple found an open church, and the pastor and his wife married them on the spot, while serving as witnesses to the same-day ceremony.

"The bus station story gets me every time," said Margo Guertin, Sales Director of Whispering Winds of Apple Valley. "No engagement, no big proposal, just 'let's find a church and do this today.'"
Since then, the Shamblins have resided in at least seven states, including California, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Texas and Alabama.
Family and work
The couple raised three children and now have four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Pat worked for the government and returned to college during their marriage.
The couple traveled together to Las Vegas, Reno and Hawaii before settling in various California locations, eventually moving to Victorville, where they lived until they came to Whispering Winds.

Pat Shamblin is a veteran of the United States Army.
A balanced marriage
The Shamblins told Whispering Winds staff they credit their long marriage to balance.
"He's idealistic, and I'm a pessimist, so we balance each other out," Patricia said. "We go with the flow."
Pat added, "If you never try anything, you'll never do anything. She makes up for my shortcomings."
Staff shared that the couple’s "go with the flow" approach to life was tested a few years ago when friends at the Victorville Senior Center planned a surprise anniversary celebration for them. It appeared that those friends scheduled the party, but forgot to invite the couple, who missed their own celebration.
Guertin remarked that the Shamblins’ 73-year-long marriage is incredible.
“What really strikes me is how they talk about each other,” Guertin said. “Pat says she makes up for his shortcomings, and Patricia says they balance each other out. That's the secret right there."
