ELLE Australia’s favourite sensitive Aquarius, Paul Mescal, and the magnetic Jessie Buckley have emerged as early awards‑season darlings thanks to Hamnet, Chloé Zhao’s haunting adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s novel. Mescal scored a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his tender, melancholy take on William Shakespeare, while Buckley received a Best Actress (Drama) nod for her luminous, grief‑soaked portrayal of Agnes. Both are already being floated as likely Oscar contenders, which only became more apparently when Buckley took home the Best Actress award at the Critics Choice Awards on January 5.

Australia also enjoyed its own moment in the spotlight: Rose Byrne earned a nomination for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, and Jacob Elordi, whose chemistry with Mia Goth in Frankenstein had us gripped, continues his ascent with a Best Supporting Actor nod. Timothée Chalamet, meanwhile, collected a Best Actor nomination for Marty Supreme, a performance many critics are calling his best yet.
