Authorities provide crash update

The crash marked the first fatal incident at LaGuardia in 34 years, said Kathryn Garcia, executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, in a press conference at LaGuardia on March 23.

The two occupants of the fire truck were taken to New York-Presbyterian Hospital following the crash, Garcia said. One was expected to be released the afternoon of March 23, while the other will be kept overnight for observation.

The fire and rescue crew had been deployed to the runway after a United Airlines aircraft "experienced an aborted takeoff," said FAA administrator Bryan Bedford. The National Transportation Safety Board is now investigating the incident with support from the FAA.

LaGuardia reopened shortly after 2 p.m., U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said. Operations will continue in a reduced capacity "for some time," he said, as the airplane and truck remain on the runway.
