‘The Testaments’ might be better than ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ and it’s getting a season 2

Praise be for fans of The Handmaid’s Tale because its follow up series The Testaments has just been renewed for a second season.

When The Handmaid’s Tale wrapped its final season in 2025, it was met with a lot of confusion. The Taylor Swift-soundtracked final episodes were puzzling, thanks in no small part to the storylines that were left feeling incomplete and the confusing narrative arcs. June Osborn’s ending was a case-in-point for this, with her epic storylines being wrapped up by her decision to… write a memoir. Needless to say, even with all the understanding about the cyclical storyline, it was somewhat lacklustre.

As a huge fan of the show who’s watched most seasons through twice, it felt incomplete. So when it became clearer that Margaret Atwood’s sequel novel, The Testaments, was also to be adapted, I hoped we might get some answers to questions that were left hanging wide open.

With The Testaments, we’re kind of, sort of getting answers. The series follows Agnes (played by Chase Infiniti), June’s daughter who was stolen from her upon the formation of Gilead, as she and her friends navigate being essentially sold off for marriage to a high powered Commander shortly after getting their first period. It’s dark and depraved, though many people were calling it “Gilead lite” in earlier episodes.

Now, with nine episodes under our perfectly tailored plum dresses, we know that the series would be returning for a second run. It’s been more of less expected since the jump, with show creator Bruce Miller making the decision to change the pacing for The Testaments. In the show, the first season will seemingly only cover some of Atwood’s book, which diverges from The Handmaid’s Tale series, which covered the entirely of the book in the first season.

The consensus in my group chats is that we need to know how the entire story unfolds. It’s hard to know whether there’ll be just one more season, or if this will go the way of Handmaid’s, which had a six-season run, but we’re also quite sure fans will watch every episode they can get. The final episode of season one will air on Disney+ in Australia on May 27, 2026 and there’s no word yet on when season two will drop.

What Is The Release Date For The Testaments Season Two?

No date has been set yet for when production will start on the second season of The Testaments.
