Kathryn Hahn and husband Ethan Sandler’s love story started in college
Agatha All Along star Kathryn Hahn has been with her husband Ethan Sandler for three decades, and they’ve been looking adorable on the red carpet together almost the entire time.

But Hahn insists that, despite their life in the spotlight, life at home is very normal.
“I live a pretty normal life,” she told Parade magazine in October 2018. “I have cute kids and a hubby forever and two dogs and a rabbit and now a hamster. We’re turning into animal hoarders. So I have this rich and creative life but also a normal life, and I’ve been able to keep the two separate and holy.”
Part of the reason they’re a bit mysterious is that Hahn does not really use social media, though the couple was posted on actress Kate Hudson’s timeline in a selfie from a June 2021 trip to Greece.
Here’s what is known about Sandler and his long and loving relationship with Hahn.
Who is Ethan Sandler?
Sandler also started out as an actor with roles when he was only a teenager in The Chocolate War, She’ll Take Romance, and Adventures in Spying. He went on to study at Northwestern, where he met Hahn.
They then lived in New York City together and headed to various auditions. She spoke to Northwestern Magazine about those early days together in a very, very tiny apartment with one small sink for everything located in Hell’s Kitchen.
“You would open the door and hit the shower,” Hahn joked. “I was always saying to Ethan, ‘Dude, when you shave, please rinse the hair before I do the dishes.’”
She said they spent their time auditioning for “off-off-off-off-off-off-off-off-Broadway shows.”
“It was the best time,” Hahn said. “I loved it. Everything about it. It was pretty heinous, but we were so young that we just didn’t know.”
They eventually began working together on the crime drama Crossing Jordan, in which Hahn had a major role as Lily Lebowski from 2001 to 2007. Sandler was cast as Lily’s love interest, ADA Jeffrey Brandau, in 2002. On the show, they were married, and when Hahn was actually pregnant in real life, it became part of the series.

Sandler went on to work behind the camera, as an executive producer and writer on New Girl, Man with a Plan, My Boys, and Whitney.
How did Sandler and Hahn meet?
They met as undergrads at Northwestern University and then graduated in 1995, moving in together immediately after.

How long have they been together?
They dated for almost 10 years before tying the knot in 2002. Hahn doesn’t talk a lot about their relationship, but in 2021, she appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. The virtual appearance included a cameo from Sandler, who Hahn insisted she could pick up. After one failed attempt, she did!
In Hahn’s November 2025 appearance on Gwyneth Paltrow’s The goop Podcast, she revealed that she and Sandler have had ups and downs over the course of their relationship.
“I remember somebody saying if you’re married 30 years [and] you have, like, five s***** years, you’re still doing great,” she added. “We’ve just spread that out over the thirty, so that always makes us feel better. Like, ‘Great. Maybe we’re just in the middle of our five-year s*** stretch.’”
Do they have any kids?
The couple share two children, their son, Leonard, and daughter, Mae. She told People that they had a funny reaction to the popularity of her character Agatha when she made her first appearance on WandaVision.
“No one can really admit to their mom that they’re cool, which I understand and respect, but they definitely were a little bit, I would just say, suspiciously nicer to me,” Hahn said. “So I feel like I’m going to take that as a huge compliment. They’re definitely proud for sure.”
Hahn opened up about Leonard going away to college in her May 2025 appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show. “I’m trying to get all the tears out now so that I can just be so happy for him when he goes off,” she said at the time. “But right now, it’s a mess. You think you’re always gonna be in that child-rearing chapter and you cannot imagine your life after it.”
The actress later revealed that having Sandler by her side offered her emotional support after Leonard left home. “Having somebody leave the house and go to college all of a sudden really brings into relief how grateful I am to have somebody to look at getting old with,” she said during her appearance on The goop Podcast. “It’s been really sweet and tender having our son out of the house… because no one else really understands it as well as we do.”
Do they have pets?
Hahn and Sandler have one dog named Banjo. The couple also fosters kittens, and were convinced to do so by their daughter.
“We’re fostering kittens currently,” Hahn told W in 2020. “This is our third litter. My 11-year-old convinced me it would be a good thing to do since there are a lot of shelters that need help. But, you know, you walk into my guest room, and it’s urine-town right now, for sure. But it’s cute as hell. And it’s all on her, all her responsibility. I’m very proud of that lady.”
“My dog really cracks me up,” Hahn said during the podcast episode. “He is such an idiot, he’s such a mutt, and he has this tail that is always so high so he’s got a really aggressive a****** and everything that he does is so stupid that he makes me laugh so hard. He’s a dingo.”
