Women rush to rescue pregnant dog from euthanasia — and save 10 lives in an instant
All alone, wandering the streets of Brookhaven, Mississippi, a very pregnant dog recently found herself with nowhere left to turn.
Animal control officers eventually found the pup and took her to the city pound, which was already at capacity. The dog would soon be euthanized if she couldn’t find somewhere else to go.
Luckily for the expectant mama, fate was on her side. When team members at Safe Haven Rescue of Mississippi heard about her situation, they quickly signed her out of the crowded pound and took her to live with foster mom Kristi Buffington Wilcox.
Rescuers were struck by the young mama’s good-natured attitude in the face of adversity. The friendly pup had never known a life of comfort — of air conditioning and endless food and water. She radiated warmth as she took it all in.
“She was so sweet,” Safe Haven Rescue of Mississippi president Christina Segura told The Dodo. “We decided to name her Sweet Caroline, like the song.”
The very next morning, barely 14 hours after she’d been pulled from the pound, Sweet Caroline gave birth to nine healthy puppies — two girls and seven boys.
Safe with her babies, Sweet Caroline quickly adapted to motherhood.
“She’s doing wonderful, being a very good mom, attentive, taking care of her puppies,” Segura said.
Segura encourages community members to help animals in their area by spaying and neutering their pets and volunteering with their local rescue groups.
“We would love for more local involvement, with families opening their homes to foster and save a life,” she said. “Also, if they see a dog in need of help, to call and report.”
Today, the whole dog family is still with Wilcox, relaxing, growing and regaining their strength. Once they’re ready, they’ll begin to look for families of their own. Until then, they’ll be out of harm's way, unwinding with those who have their best interests at heart.
“Everybody is doing very well,” Segura said. “Their future is gonna be bright.”
