Vets x-ray pregnant shelter dog — and her puppies aren't what they expect
Meet Winnie the Pooch: a friendly 1-year-old beagle who recently became a new mama to a surprising number of puppies.
When Winnie arrived at the Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) as a transfer from another shelter, the expectant mother was underweight, a mere 23 pounds. And yet, when rescuers X-rayed Winnie, they found she was carrying three larger-than-expected puppies. KHS team members weren't sure who Winnie had her babies with, but they suspected he may have been a bigger breed, which contributed to the puppies' proportions. They knew Winnie might need help when it was time to give birth, so they began making a plan.
“The size of her puppies was the most surprising factor,” KHS PR coordinator Jen Harris told The Dodo. “We knew that it would be difficult for Winnie to give birth to her babies without assistance from our veterinary team.”
Dr. Bewley, Winnie’s veterinarian, could tell the mama was ready to pop any minute. She quickly agreed to foster Winnie, setting her up with everything she needed for a safe, easy birthing process.
When Winnie went into labor, Dr. Bewley was right by her side, monitoring her for hours. Eventually, Dr. Bewley decided the safest course of action was an emergency C-section. She called her team members and met them at the veterinary center. Twenty minutes later, Winnie’s three beautiful puppies were born.
Rescuers named the puppies Tigger, Eeyore and Piglet. Today, the whole family is still with Dr. Bewley, recuperating and relaxing.
“Winnie and her babies are thriving under Dr. Bewley’s care,” Harris said. “She is continuing to foster them, and everyone is quietly nursing and getting to know each other under Dr. Bewley’s watchful eye. Winnie is even starting to show off her cuddly, sweet personality as she’s gained Dr. Bewley’s trust.”
Rescuers hope this story encourages community members and animal lovers to consider donating to their local shelters by giving money or time. For dogs like Winnie, Tigger, Eeyore and Piglet, these efforts are always worthwhile.
“If you're in a position to foster a mama and her pups, it makes an incredible difference,” Harris said. “And even if fostering isn't an option, donations and supplies are always welcomed and put to great use!”
