Shelter dog won't sleep until staff comes to tuck her in at night
Missy ended up at Humane Society of Broward County after her family moved away and couldn’t take her with them. As the pup mourned the loss of her family, the staff spent some extra time with her while she settled into life at the shelter — and that’s how they learned about her love for being tucked in.
“Missy is picky about her food, and the animal care staff would bring her in their office to eat at times,” Cherie Wachter, vice president of marketing at Humane Society of Broward County, told The Dodo. “While she would hang out with them, the staff would put shirts or sweaters on her. Often Missy would snuggle on the bed in the office, and staff started to cover her up with a blanket.”
Missy loved this so much that the staff started covering her with blankets and tucking her in whenever she was in her kennel, too, and it soon became a vital part of her daily routine.
“Once the animal care staff realized how much she liked getting tucked in, they made sure to do it every day … both morning and night,” Wachter said.
Getting tucked into bed made Missy feel special and helped her cope with life at the shelter. More than anything, the staff wanted Missy to feel safe and loved, and if being tucked in accomplished that, they were happy to do it as much as she wanted.
“She wags her tail and gets excited when the staff would go in her kennel with blankets,” Wachter said.
The shelter posted about Missy on social media to share her adorable routine and sweet personality with the world, and that’s ultimately what led to her being adopted.
Missy’s new dad drove over three and a half hours to meet Missy, introduce her to his dogs, and ultimately adopt her and take her home. Now she finally has a home again, with all the blankets and snuggle opportunities she could ever ask for.
