Congratulations are in order for Dua Lipa and Callum Turner, who officially tied the knot on May 31. The couple confirmed their engagement almost exactly one year ago, after on and a half years of dating, when Dua granted an interview to British Vogue. But it was the sparkling ring on her finger, which appeared in December the year before, that had offered glittering hints that the couple were taking the next step in their relationship.

Dua Lipa’s gorgeous chunky engagement ring was a refreshing departure from tradition. Historically, engagement rings have leaned towards delicate designs that accentuate the stone’s size while aligning with the feminine ideal of the “bride”. In recent years, we’ve seen a move away from these traditions. Just as Dua Lipa chose an entirely non-traditional Schiaparelli suit for her wedding day, she and Turner opted for a thick and gleaming gold band with a low-set stone.

By 2025, the phenomenon of the “surprise” engagement ring had largely passed, with most couples choosing their investment piece together. But Dua Lipa revealed that Callum Turner did things the old-fashioned way, not only choosing, but designing, the ring himself. The singer told British Vogue that Turner consulted her best friend and sister before having the statement piece custom-made. “I’m obsessed with it. It’s so me,” she said. “It’s nice to know the person you’re spending the rest of your life with knows you very well.”

Dua Lipa’s non-traditional ring sat right in with a trend for unique engagement rings we saw last year. From coloured gemstones to unique orientations like Zendaya’s east-west diamond, and vintage and antique diamonds, à la Taylor Swift brides, celebrities or otherwise, have been looking for something that speaks to their personal style as much as their love story.

Rachel Boston of Rachel Boston jewels said over the last few years she’s seen clients gravitate toward chunky engagement rings. “Dua’s ring is not a conventional choice but it is extremely elegant and quite on trend,” she said. “We’ve seen a lot of our clients in the past year or two gravitate towards wider and more gold-heavy bands,” she said, estimating Dua Lipa’s band to be roughly 7.8mm. And the diamond’s unique setting is also a statement. “The diamond’s half-rubover setting really frames the stone beautifully: it is still very much centre-stage, holding its own amongst all the gold, and the open setting feels more modern and feminine in contrast to the heavier band.”

If you’re looking for a similar style, Boston says the diamond is a round cut with a raised profile. The half-rubover setting, which encases the entire circumference of the stone, provides additional protection and definition. This is part of the appeal for brides like Dua Lipa and Miley Cyrus, who got engaged to Maxx Morando with a similar style by Jacquie Aiche in December last year. Both women spend a lot of time touring and partying, and experts say that for busy brides, there’s a practical magic to a thicker band.

Jeweller Laura Vann, who owns an eponymous jewellery line, says there’s a practical magic to the chunky engagement ring. “They not only look great and feel elevated, but they’re also super practical. There’s a sense of sturdiness and security, especially for clients who are really hands-on or active,” she explains. And a thicker band also provides protection for larger stones, something we’ve been seeing with the rise of maximalist designs.

As Boston explains, there has been a shift towards thicker bands in recent years. While thinner bands were traditionally chosen to accentuate the size of a smaller diamond, wider bands tend to require a larger stone. Laurie Suttie, gemologist and ring expert at Queensmith, notes that with the rise of lab-grown diamonds, 2-carat cuts have become far more accessible. “Thicker bands are a bit of a flex as they are often chosen to support a larger diamond.” She estimates that, if natural, the 2-carat diamond could be valued at close to $73,000 AU, whereas a lab-grown version would be closer to $9,400 AU.
