Oreo's new limited-edition BTS flavor is so good, I'm keeping a pack on my desk

When it comes to snacks, Oreos are one of my top-tier picks. They're essential to my favorite lazy baked bars, I was an enthusiastic participant in our Oreo taste test, and I occasionally keep a package on my office desk.

I also unabashedly love BTS, the global superstar boy group (somehow barely survived that concert ticket war). So when Oreo announced a limited-edition collaboration with BTS, I immediately started scanning shelves before the sandwich cookies even were released - you know, as a reflex.

Oreo Launches New Limited-Edition Flavor in Collaboration with BTS

What You Should Know About the OREO x BTS Brown Sugar Pancake Cookies

This is BTS' first snack collaboration. In an interview, group leader RM says that Oreos are "a snack we've eaten since we were young." In fact, when BTS was at song camp working on their newest album, Arirang, they had packs of Oreos within arm's reach (relatable). When it came to choosing a flavor, BTS chose hotteok as the inspiration.

The popular street snack in Korea is "made by stuffing balls of yeasted dough with cinnamon and brown sugar, then frying them on a hot pan or griddle while pressing into flat, crispy round pancakes," writes Justine Lee, who wrote The Kitchn's recipe so you can re-create them home. And for BTS Army (their fans), they'll know that it's also one of the group's favorite snacks. "We wanted to share with everyone the kinds of dessert flavors Koreans enjoy," says Jin.

The Oreo filling is a brown sugar pancake creme, to mirror hotteok's flavors. The cookie part is purple - a first for Oreo, but that won't come as a surprise to BTS' fans, as it's BTS' color (this is a K-Pop thing, hold ya judgement). As a nod to the group's 13th anniversary (they debuted June 13, 2013), there are 13 different cookie embossments personally designed by BTS.

According to the press release, the new flavors will be rolling out across more than 80+ countries. If you were shut out of the presale at Oreo's website, do not panic! The new BTS flavor will hit retailers in the U.S. June 8 and remain available for a limited time, while supplies last.

My Honest Review of the Limited-Edition OREO x BTS Brown Sugar Pancake Cookies

I have had hotteok before - at Grace Street in New York City's Koreatown, on set when Justine made her recipe, and at home with the Trader Joe's version (pretty good), but not in Korea (yet!). It's sweet and gooey on the inside, and perfectly crispy on the outside.

When I opened the package of Oreos, I was immediately hit with the smell of sugar. The cookie part was a vibrant purple, and the creme swirled with brown and white colors. After my first bite, my immediate thought was "sweet." So if you have a sweet tooth, these are for you. If you don't, I think one is the perfect little treat.

Hotteok is, of course, sweet as well, so it definitely lived up to that. The cookie veers a bit more towards caramel flavor, but still has that cinnamon-y, sugary flavor. The cookie part has a strong crunch to it! Compared to the original Oreo, it smells and tastes more sugary.

I also offered cookies (really generous of me, actually) to some select friends. The verdict? "Sweet." Mitchell Dalby, freelance food stylist, also pointed out that the cookie seemed a bit drier than usual, which added to the crunch and snap.

While there's no wrong way to eat an Oreo cookie, several BTS members have a favorite way - and each one is more interesting and creative than the next. Suga twists his Oreo, and then eats only the creme, which V agrees with. Jimin thinks we should "eat the white part, then dip the rest in milk," which is interesting because I … don't normally dip them in milk (that did horrify my friend, Krystin).

April Song, our strategic partnerships manager, twists and separates the cookie, then dips the plain cookie half in the other's creme. As for me, I keep things pretty classic: twist and separate the halves and eat the creme half first, then the cookie.

If you want to shake it up, J-Hope suggests crushing the cookie and adding it to milk to eat the crumbs, while Jungkook suggested adding it to coffee.
