I just spent the weekend going through my denim closet (yes, it’s a closet because I own so many pairs). I donated styles I hadn’t worn in months, was reminded of some pairs I actually sorely missed, and realized I definitely have a preference for one particular wash (read: dark). Right on cue, Julia Roberts stepped out in style, and even more right on cue, so many dark-wash jeans are on sale during Amazon’s October Prime Day, a.k.a., Prime Big Deal Days.

Martha Stewart, 84, and I, 31, are also fans of dark-wash jeans. I find the color looks so rich and much more elegant than light washes, which is why my denim closet tends to lean in that direction. In fact, when styled with extra elegant pieces, like Roberts did (ahem, blazer and blouse), dark-wash trousers could easily compete with classic office trousers, making them totally suitable for boardroom meetings.

That said, you can easily dress them down, too. I love wearing my dark-wash wide legs with a crisp white tee and white sneakers, which pop even more when paired with the darker denim. But, I also love the idea of pairing a pointed-toe heel and blazer-top with the jeans, too. See! They’re so versatile.
