Mail carrier calls for help when she spots 16 'skinny' babies alone in woods
Last month, a mail carrier was driving along her route, through a rural area in Tamms, Illinois, when she spotted something shocking just off the side of the road.
There was a pile of 16 defenseless puppies poking out from the brambles and leaves, huddled together for warmth.
The mail carrier called a friend who works in animal rescue and told her what she’d seen. Eventually, the news reached Save Them All Animal Rescue (STAAR) cofounder Ali Rippin, who began hatching a plan to get the pups to safety.
Rippin’s rescue colleague, who lives closer to Tamms, collected each puppy and transported them to a warm barn where the dogs could decompress.
When Rippin finally arrived, she almost couldn’t believe her eyes.
“It was heartbreaking to see them all,” Rippin told The Dodo. “It was very clear they were extremely malnourished and dehydrated.”
The rescuer piled the puppies into her van and raced them to the vet, where experts began lifesaving care. On top of malnourishment and dehydration, the puppies also suffered from ticks, fleas and parasites. Sadly, two of them did not survive.
Days went by, and the remaining 14 puppies began turning a corner. Their personalities brightened as they started feeling better.
“They eventually settled in and soaked up all the pets and cuddles,” Rippin said.
Given that STARR is a small, foster-based rescue, Rippin knew they would need help caring for all of the dogs. Luckily, three other rescue groups soon offered a hand, and the puppies were divided between the capable, temporary homes.
Rippin hopes this story encourages pet owners to spay and neuter their animals and to support their local shelters through donating and volunteering. After all, rescue groups made a world of difference in the lives of these pups, and they’re the reason they’ll enjoy brighter days ahead.
“They are all doing wonderfully now!” Rippin said. “They will be looking for forever homes through each rescue at 8 weeks of age and should have long, healthy lives!”
