Want a golden retriever personality without the size? Try these breeds
Golden retrievers are among the most-loved dog breeds in America, consistently remaining in the top five on the American Kennel Club (AKC)’s list of most-popular breeds for the past 30 years.
Their loving nature, sense of loyalty and sweet temperament have made them a favorite breed for generations of dog owners. But, as adored as they are, goldens may not always be a perfect fit for every lifestyle.
These pups shed heavily, and they need plenty of exercise—around one or two hours per day, and, because of their size, goldens can be challenging to keep for people who live in apartments.
If you love the classic golden retriever personality but want a smaller-size dog, then there are several breeds that share many of the same behavioral traits without taking up so much space. Idaho veterinarian Chyrle Bonk told Newsweek that some smaller breeds feature those same golden retriever qualities remarkably well.

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever
Bonk told Newsweek that one great option is the Nova Scotia duck tolling retriever.
“Nova Scotia duck tolling retrievers are the smallest retriever breed out there,” Bonk said. “They have the same intelligence, drive, and affection of other retrievers but stand only about 18 inches tall and weigh about 40 pounds.”
If you like the retriever look and mindset but aren’t keen on having a big dog, tollers offer a balanced option.

Cocker Spaniels
Cocker Spaniels are another breed often compared to golden retrievers in terms of temperament. Smaller than golden, cockers are known for their affection, loyalty, and thick and soft fur that many people compare to golden retrievers.
They thrive on human companionship and are just as eager to please as goldens. Bonk said, however, that potential owners should be cautious of common health issues that may affect them.
“Cockers can be prone to a number of health issues, including ear, eye, and skin issues,” she said, which means they may need more-frequent grooming sessions and veterinary visits.

Miniature Goldens
If you want a breed that looks even more like a golden, then you might consider a miniature golden breed, which have recently grown in popularity.
These are designer crosses that combine golden retrievers with smaller breeds such as cocker spaniels, cavalier King Charles spaniels, or miniature poodles to create a smaller version of the original golden look.
However, the results on these breeds can vary. “These crosses may be more like a golden or more like the other parent breed and they may be harder to find,” Bonk said.
While no dog breed can perfectly replicate another, these smaller breeds and mixes offer many of the same personality traits in a miniature version, without the pressure of having a big dog that requires a lot more effort.
