Every Disney World ride based on a movie, ranked from worst to best

From cinematic flops to theme park icons, here’s how every movie-based ride at Disney World truly stacks up.

Disney World is full of rides inspired by movies, from animated classics to blockbuster hits. But not every attraction lives up to its source material. As someone who’s ridden every single one of these film-based rides, I can tell you there’s a huge range: Some transport you straight into the movie, while others… Well, let’s just say the magic is a little harder to find.

From forgettable flops to must-ride masterpieces, I’ve broken down every movie-based ride in Disney World (and ranked them from worst to best) so you’ll know exactly which ones deserve a spot on your itinerary — and which you can skip.

Note: While some Disney World rides like Pirates of the Caribbean and Haunted Mansion have spawned their own successful (or unsuccessful) film franchises, I’m focusing only on rides that were inspired by or created in connection with a movie.

The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh

Based on Disney’s classic Winnie the Pooh animated films, the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh is a gentle dark ride perfect for little ones — or anyone in need of a sugar-coated nostalgia trip. You’ll float through Pooh’s whimsical world, bouncing with Tigger and sliding down into a “heffalump” dream, but for thrill-seekers, it’s more nap than adventure.

Sure, it’s charming in its own slow-paced, honey-smeared way. But frankly, it’s best enjoyed with toddlers or very young children, unless you happen to be a particularly enthusiastic Winnie the Pooh fan.

The Magic Carpets of Aladdin

Inspired by the 1992 animated film Aladdin, this aerial spinner lets guests soar above Agrabah. It’s a fun, family-friendly ride that gives a modest thrill while letting you wave at fellow “magic carpet riders” below. The ride’s charm is undeniable, though it’s more about the playful theme and photo ops than any real sense of adventure.

However, when it comes to aerial spinner rides, Disney World has a number of them — and one other, Dumbo the Flying Elephant, is also on this list. While the Magic Carpets of Aladdin does offer a bit more of a customized flying experience, it simply isn’t as good as Dumbo. The vantage points aren’t very exciting, and it doesn’t really feel like it’s wholly connected to Adventureland or the storyline of Aladdin.

The Seas with Nemo and Friends

The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, The Magic Carpets of Aladdin, The Seas with Nemo and Friends, Toy Story Mania, Gran Fiesta Tour Starring the Three Caballeros, Dumbo the Flying Elephant, Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid, Peter Pan’s Flight, Na’vi River Journey, Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters, Frozen Ever After, Mad Tea Party, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Avatar Flight of Passage, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, Star Tours – The Adventures Continue

Based on Finding Nemo, this ride immerses you in an undersea world with the characters you know and love. The ride’s slow pace and whimsical scenes are great for kids and fans of the movie, but for anyone looking for excitement, it’s a gentle, contemplative journey rather than a pulse-pounding experience.

While The Seas with Nemo and Friends is packed with cute details and playful nods to the film, it’s rather uneventful.

Toy Story Mania

Featuring characters (well, toys!) from the Toy Story film franchise, this interactive shooting-gallery ride is equal parts fun and competitive. Guests spin through carnival-style games hosted by Woody, Buzz, and the gang, aiming for high scores and bragging rights.

It’s a brilliantly executed combination of movie nostalgia, clever visuals, and addictive gameplay—simple, but surprisingly thrilling for all ages.

However, if you’re looking for an attraction that’s a true ride — or one that’s more closely tied to the Toy Story films and their storylines — Toy Story Mania doesn’t exactly deliver. Your ride vehicle stops more than it moves so the screens can take center stage. And there’s really no storyline at all here.

Gran Fiesta Tour Starring the Three Caballeros

Gran Fiesta Tour with the Three Caballeros

Inspired by the 1944 animated film The Three Caballeros, this Mexico-themed boat ride was technically created solely for EPCOT’s Mexico Pavilion, but revamped to focus on Donald, José, and Panchito. As a result, the calm boat ride is colorful and charming…but also a little forgettable.

You’ll see some characters and enjoy a few musical numbers, but overall Gran Fiesta Tour lacks the energy and storytelling punch of other movie-based attractions. Still, it’s a pleasant cultural detour with some cute nods to the film.

Dumbo the Flying Elephant

Dumbo may be a tearjerker of an animated Disney film, but this flying spinner ride at Disney World is an iconic experience. Kids (and even adults) adore controlling how high Dumbo flies, and the ride’s whimsical theming captures the spirit of the film. It’s more about nostalgia and charm than thrills, but it’s a timeless, light-hearted favorite.

And compared to the other aerial spinner on this list, The Magic Carpets of Aladdin, it’s a far better interpretation of the movie it’s based on. Featuring circus-inspired theming (including a circus-y playground right in the queue) that’s perfectly in line with the original film, Dumbo the Flying Elephant delivers on many fronts.

However, with an often-long wait and more kid-focused fun, Dumbo doesn’t quite measure up as one of Disney World’s best attractions overall.

Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid

Under the Sea Journey of the Little Mermaid, Ariel and Flounder scene

As a kid, I long hoped a ride based on 1989’s The Little Mermaid would come to Disney World. In 2012, it finally happened when Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid opened in Magic Kingdom’s Fantasyland. Based on the animated classic, this dark ride immerses guests in Ariel’s underwater world.

I love that it follows the film’s storyline, from singing with Sebastian to joining Ariel’s journey to the surface, and the scenes are visually vibrant and delightfully nostalgic. It’s not intense, but the combination of music, characters, and storytelling makes it a solid ride.

Peter Pan’s Flight

Based on the 1953 film Peter Pan, this classic dark ride lets you soar over London and Neverland in a pirate ship. The ride’s charm is undeniable, with intricate sets and magical projections. While its thrill factor is minimal, Peter Pan’s Flight is a pure, timeless Disney experience that captures the movie’s adventurous spirit perfectly.

While this ride is brief and often has a lengthy wait time that doesn’t exactly pay off, it is a classic. If you’re someone who loves Disney’s animated films and those original dark rides, it’s worth experiencing at least once, even if it’s purely for nostalgia.

Na'vi River Journey in Disney's Animal Kingdom, Na'vi shaman

Based on the Avatar film franchise, Na’vi River Journey is a serene boat ride that takes you through the bioluminescent world of Pandora. The visuals are breathtaking, with detailed animatronics and glowing flora creating an immersive experience. It’s more meditative than thrilling, but the technical wizardry and connection to the film’s lush world make it unforgettable.

Now, I will note that even if you’re not a huge Avatar fan, this ride is worth experiencing at least once. It’s stellar in the way that it brings such a colorful, unique world to life, making it even more immersive than seeing the films themselves in 3D. But it may not be one you want to ride again and again.

Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters

Inspired by Toy Story, this interactive shooting ride lets guests zap targets as they battle Emperor Zurg alongside Buzz. It’s fun, fast-paced, and rewards accuracy, making it a great mix of competitiveness and whimsy. The connection to the movie’s characters and story gives it extra charm.

(Oh, and if you’re wondering where Slinky Dog Dash is on this list, you won’t find it. It is inspired by Toy Story, but it doesn’t tie as directly to the films as Toy Story Mania and Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters do.)

Frozen Ever After

Frozen Ever After Anna and Kristoff

Based on 2013’s Frozen, this boat ride in EPCOT’s Norway Pavilion is a fan-pleaser, featuring Anna, Elsa, and friends in a musical adventure. While the ride is relatively short, the visuals, songs, and animatronics are impressive, capturing the film’s magic. It’s a must-do for fans, even if the ride itself is more delightful than thrilling.

And Frozen Ever After is slated for a big update. The ride’s Audio-Animatronics will be changed to remove the projection mapping faces and more closely match the advanced versions found in the international Disney Parks.

Mad Tea Party

Both a classic ride and one that’s notorious for being fun and stomach-churning, Mad Tea Party is inspired by the whimsical world of Alice in Wonderland. And this spinning teacup ride is as chaotic as it is colorful, in all the right ways.

Guests control the spin, making it a surprisingly intense ride for such a simple concept. The ride captures the film’s eccentric energy perfectly, though it’s more of a dizzying delight than a story-driven adventure. I’d argue there could technically be more storytelling here, but frankly it’s a great, straightforward spin off Alice’s story (pun intended).

Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure

Let’s be honest: The visuals in Disney/Pixar’s Ratatouille made everyone want to step inside the kitchen and try Remy’s dishes. When you ride Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure at EPCOT, it’s almost possible.

This trackless ride shrinks you to Remy’s size for a frenetic culinary adventure. It’s playful, immersive, and full of clever effects, making you feel like you’re truly running through a Parisian kitchen. The ride is both cute and inventive, brilliantly translating the movie to a theme park experience.

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train

Okay, technically the Snow White-inspired attraction present in Magic Kingdom’s Fantasyland was more accurate to the film’s storyline. But frankly, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is a far superior (and way more fun) ride.

Based on Walt Disney’s first-ever full-length animated feature film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, this Disney World roller coaster combines a smooth thrill with charming animatronics. Guests swing through the mine with the dwarfs and enjoy catchy musical moments, making it a perfect blend of story and coaster excitement. It’s a quintessential family-friendly thrill with a strong movie connection.

Avatar Flight of Passage

Flight of Passage, Animal Kingdom thrills

Just like Animal Kingdom’s Na’vi River Journey, Flight of Passage is inspired by the Avatar film franchise. And this flight simulator is nothing short of spectacular. Sure, it’s screen based, but it’s one thrilling and immersive experience.

Guests soar on banshees over Pandora, feeling wind, motion, and immersion like never before. It’s an adrenaline-pumping, visually stunning experience that perfectly captures the majesty of the movie’s world—truly a ride that earns every bit of its hype.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind

Inspired by the Guardians of the Galaxy film franchise, this cutting-edge roller coaster combines storytelling, music, and high-speed thrills. Guests are launched through space in a rotating ride system, with fun nods to the film and its quirky characters.

It’s bold, exhilarating, and a definite highlight for thrill-seekers and Marvel fans alike. And, for those who love a fast, surprising coaster, it blends today’s technology with a popular film and its characters flawlessly. Plus, in my personal opinion, it manages to use the film characters in creative ways, bringing them beyond their original onscreen storylines.

Star Tours inside the ride

Did you think Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind would snag the top spot? Well, Star Tours – The Adventures Continue is actually the best Disney World ride based on a movie. Sure, it might not be as new or as exciting as Cosmic Rewind. But there’s a reason Star Tours has endured for so long: It’s fun, it’s just the right amount of thrilling, and it’s always fresh.

Based on the Star Wars film franchise, this motion simulator takes you on a galaxy-spanning adventure with familiar characters and planets. The randomized sequences keep it fresh, and fans of the films will love spotting Easter eggs.

Best of all, Disney constantly updates Star Tours as the Star Wars universe expands. Recent years have seen a total ride refresh (Rex does seem to be enjoying his new role as DJ over at Oga’s) and storyline additions, introducing new scenes and character appearances tied to recent releases like The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and Andor. It’s a ride that’s always evolving alongside its audience and its universe, and that makes it incredibly tough to top.
