As the Trump administration and broader MAGA movement continue to shape the national political landscape ― and global events ― in profound ways, their influence has also extended beyond policy and into culture, particularly the aesthetics of our times.

There’s been talk of “conservative girl makeup,”“Mar-a-Lago face” and even MAGA-coded fashion for women. But politics can show up in menswear, as well.

From wraparound sunglasses to red baseball caps to uber-tight Henley shirts, certain fashion choices have taken on new meaning in today’s hyper-visible, hyper-polarized culture.

“It’s important to consider where fashion trends come from,” Danielle Sponder Testa, an assistant professor at Arizona State University’s Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, told HuffPost. “They aren’t just plucked from a bag blindly, but are a reflection of consumers’ needs, moods and personal priorities. Therefore, we see trends emerging to build on the language of ‘conservative,’ ‘traditional’ and ‘masculine’ because it aligns with values and sentiments of a large cohort in the current U.S. population.”

Clothing and accessory choices that might have once read as purely functional or apolitical can now signal something more, especially with the rise of social media as a tool for communicating beliefs and values through style.

“With a quick scroll, we can see how others who share our beliefs and values are dressing,” Testa said. “This allows fashion to be about more than emulation, but also about our inclusion in a specific group. So when it comes to the U.S. conservative movement, we see colors, styles and details used to represent beliefs.”

Of course, not everyone who wears a particular hue of hat or type of sunglasses is trying to make a statement. Some people just enjoy the functionality or color for nonpolitical reasons, and many such garments have appeared in offices, runways and recreational settings far from politics for many years. As with any trend, these associations are fluid.

“None of these garments is inherently political,” said Edith Chan, a celebrity stylist and image consultant. “But when certain combinations appear consistently in rallies, media coverage and among public figures, they begin to function as visual shorthand. That’s how style shifts from neutral clothing into cultural signaling.”

Below, style experts break down the pieces, brands and aesthetics most commonly associated with MAGA-coded menswear — and how they’ve come to carry political meaning.

Wraparound Sunglasses

Once associated with athletes and Y2K aesthetics, wraparound sunglasses have taken on a more loaded cultural meaning in recent years. For many, these close-fitting, often reflective frames have become a kind of visual shorthand for a particular version of right-leaning masculinity.

A widely circulated meme stitches together selfies of conservative-leaning social media users ― many men in the driver’s seat of a car ― where the common denominator isn’t just the setting but the same wraparound “gas station sunglasses.”

The style website Fashionista once dubbed them “The Sporty Sunglasses Co-opted by Fashion and Fascism.” Comedian Marie Faustin jokingly referred to the style as “insurrection sunglasses” in a viral TikTok video with the caption “Big MAGA energy.” In one Reddit thread, a user quipped that “the rounder someone’s sunglasses, the higher likelihood that person is left leaning,” and “the flatter and more reflective they are, the more likely the wearer is right leaning.”

Wraparound sunglasses, often with colorful reflective lenses, have become associated with the MAGA movement.

There are, of course, practical reasons for the style’s popularity. Performance brands like Oakley ― long favored by military personnel and law enforcement ― specialize in wraparound silhouettes designed for maximum sun protection. But as those associations bleed into everyday style, the glasses can also take on a more symbolic role, signaling emotional distance, stoicism, even a kind of tactical readiness.

Baseball Caps, Especially In Red And Camo

“The first thing that typically comes to mind when we discuss MAGA-coded menswear is the red ′Make America Great Again’ hat,” Testa said. “However, the impact of this statement piece has expanded well beyond a single hat style to include a broader array of politically coded headwear. These hats come in various colors, but often include an option in red or camouflage, reflecting American pride and a traditional embrace of masculinity.”

She noted that many hats also feature direct political messaging or symbolism, as with “Don’t Tread on Me” caps. There’s no doubt the rise of the MAGA hat means certain people now squint or do a double-take when they see a figure in a bright red cap approaching.

“This category of headwear is likely the most direct integration of politics into men’s fashion right now, though it is by no means the only example,” Testa said. ”The specific shade of bright red used in MAGA hats has also become a highly recognizable political symbol, and its significance as a marker of conservative identity has expanded beyond campaign merchandise.”

Attendees listen to Trump speak at a 2024 campaign event at the Dayton International Airport in Vandalia, Ohio.

Of course, the 2024 presidential ticket of Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz made moves to reclaim the camo hat with one of the campaign’s most popular merch items. Still, the broader visual language remains heavily shaped by its association with MAGA politics.

Ultimately, these flamboyant caps have maintained their association with the “anti-establishment” image the Trump administration has cultivated. As menswear writer Derek Guy noted in an article for The Nation, the goal is “not to persuade, but to provoke” with this accessory. “Recall Marjorie Taylor Greene shouting from the stands during Biden’s 2024 State of the Union, her red hat standing out in a room full of dark suits.”

The All-Black Tech Bro Look

While some elements of MAGA-coded style lean into vibrant, attention-seeking pieces like the bright red hats, others move in the opposite direction with a stripped-down, almost colorless palette.

“There is also the simple black ‘tech startup’ aesthetics that align with new money and achieving the American dream,” Testa noted.

That influence is tied, in part, to the connection between right-leaning politics and tech CEOs like Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg.

Elon Musk listens as Trump speaks to reporters in the Oval Office of the White House on May 30, 2025.

“The manosphere has really altered what Republican men’s style looks like,” said style and cultural commentator Chelsea Perry. “The influence of tech oligarchs and billionaires has never been more apparent.”

From a style perspective, there’s Musk’s “dark MAGA” look, with black jeans, T-shirts, hats, jackets and more. Bezos and Zuckerberg have also gone heavy in black in their wardrobes ― as if to convey authority, focus and a vibe that is serious and vaguely intimidating

So while an all-black outfit might once have been associated with theater kids in the backstage crew for the spring musical, it’s now also part of a broader “tech bro” visual language that overlaps with conservative-coded masculinity. The message is less about creativity and flamboyance and more about dominance, discipline and self-containment.

Uber-Tight Shirts And Pants

“There’s something to be said about the most popular far-right influencers exclusively wearing slim-tight pants,” Perry said. “Part of that is because of how tied masculinity is to physical fitness and looking as muscular as possible.”

That emphasis on visibly displaying strength can sometimes veer into spectacle, as seen in the widely circulated videos of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. working out in tight blue jeans.

Perry believes this trend is also somewhat comical “because there was a time not long ago when a fitted shirt and slightly cropped, skinny pants was viewed as too feminine by that same crowd.”

A Politico article about the 2025 inauguration fashion criticized Trump acolyte Vivek Ramaswamy’s “slim-fit, shrunken suits,” with sharply tapered trousers so tight that “you could almost make out the text messages on his phone.”

That overly tight look extends beyond pants. Compression shirts, muscle tees, snug polos and close-cut Henleys have become staples ― sometimes even worn a size or two too small to emphasize the chest, arms and shoulders.

Tight-fitting clothing that emphasizes muscles is part of the gender dynamics at play in MAGA-coded fashion.

Some experts who spoke to HuffPost offered Joe Rogan and Andrew Tate as examples of this look, which has some overlap with another related aesthetic.

“There is also the rugged, heritage workwear aesthetic that embraces traditional masculinity and gender dynamics from the early industrialized America,” Testa said.

Work boots and tactical gear suggest manual labor and self-reliance, whether or not the person wearing them lives that kind of lifestyle.

Tactical And Military-Inspired Gear

Beyond any single accessory or silhouette, one of the most defining threads running through MAGA-coded menswear is the embrace of tactical and military-adjacent gear.

At rallies and other right-wing events, you’ll often see performance fabrics, camouflage gear, combat-style boots and utility vests styled together in a tight rotation of drab, utilitarian colors like black, khaki and olive. The goal appears to be a stoic warrior vibe.

And the vibe isn’t always U.S. military either. Border Patrol official Gregory Bovino has been criticized for wearing clothing that ― in conjunction with his agency’s actions ― sometimesdrawscomparisons to Nazi attire.

Border Patrol official Gregory Bovino's militaristic style has sparked criticism.

Extremists have also played a role in shaping this MAGA look, as seen with the Trump-supporting, neofascist group the Proud Boys. Journalist and podcaster Robert Evans has described their vibe as a kind of “cargo cult of masculinity” ― visually approximating strength and authority through gear that evokes military or law enforcement.

Red, White And Blue ... And Gold

“More broadly, the red, white and blue palette of the American flag has become increasingly politicized within fashion,” Testa said. While patriotic colors historically functioned as neutral symbols of national identity, in today’s polarized climate, many consumers interpret the coloring as a political statement.”

That shift becomes even more pronounced with displays of flag imagery. Stars-and-stripes patterns, American flag prints and graphic tees referencing “1776” or the Second Amendment are a frequent sight in conservative spaces.

“In the past, wearing an American flag on Independence Day was a standard uniform for many Americans, but today, among many groups, it is perceived as a specific statement relating to conservative beliefs or the MAGA movement,” Testa said.

Even more overtly political are the endless shirts featuring Trump’s mug shot and other images of the president alongside the American flag ― merging patriotism with personal loyalty to this single political figure and his MAGA movement.

Supporters gather at a Trump campaign rally in Waco, Texas, in 2023.

In the conservative era of Trump, another bright color joins the patriotic three: gold. Official Trump merchandise features a great deal of gold and gold-accented clothing, accessories and novelty items ― lending an air of gaudy, flashy theater.

As Guy noted in The Nation, this aesthetic shift mirrors a political one, where loud spectacle becomes the name of the game.

“Where Reaganism once whispered the genteel respectability of brass buttons, Trumpism bellows in red MAGA hats, ‘Never Surrender’ T-shirts, and metallic gold sneakers that give off a tinsel gleam like a casino chandelier,” he wrote.

Polos, Khakis And Other Preppy Country Club Fare

Of course, there is still an element of traditional conservative attire to the realm of MAGA-coded fashion today. Chan noted that certain subtle signals don’t necessarily seem political on their own but start to feel that way in certain contexts.

“What seems to drive conservative style aesthetics in men today is less about fashion trends and more about signaling stability and continuity,” she explained. Traditionalism plays a central role. There’s a visible preference for classic American menswear ― blue suits, white shirts, red ties, polo shirts, khakis, pieces that feel familiar and rooted in midcentury business and prep culture.”

This style communicates order, structure and conventional masculinity with little room for experimentation or subversion.

“Think classic, heritage looks ― polos, khakis, loafers, clean tailoring, Americana outerwear like field jackets or waxed coats, and over the last couple of years, the rise of ‘quiet luxury,’” Chan said, adding that quarter-zip pullovers, navy blazers, Oxford shirts, straight-fit jeans and tennis shoes also fit the conservative bill.

There is still an element of traditional preppy

“This aesthetic values restraint, order and timelessness over trends, and it’s often reinforced by brands like Ralph Lauren, Fred Perry, Brooks Brothers and J.McLaughlin,” Chan said.

Indeed, Fred Perry has also been pulled more directly into right-wing politics, as the extremist Proud Boys adopted the brand’s black and yellow polo shirt as its uniform. While this group might seem far removed from the preppy “Brooks Brothers riot” Republicans of yore, there is perhaps a greater meaning to that element of sartorial overlap.

“To me, what’s driving conservative style today isn’t just politics ― it’s a desire for order, clarity and belonging in an uncertain cultural moment,” Chan said. “Fashion has become a quiet way to say this is what I believe in without saying it out loud.”

Florsheims And Boat Shoes

When it comes to footwear, there are overt examples like FBI Director Kash Patel’s personalized Nike sneakers, which feature a Punisher skull and the colors black and yellow (hues evocative of The Proud Boys’ Fred Perry polos).

Consider also the $145 Florsheim dress shoes that Trump is reportedly “obsessed” with buying for the men in his political orbit. Manufactured abroad, this fixation seems to stand in contrast to the president’s “American First” messaging, but they do fit with the aforementioned traditional preppy look of U.S. conservatism.

According to a Wall Street Journal report from early March, Trump

Political commentator and social media personality Suzanne Lambert noted that boat shoes “irrespective of season and without any regard to whether or not a boat is actually present” can also be MAGA-coded.

“They are really chasing the aspirational, preppy, country club aesthetic, and these clothes allow them to look the part without actually playing the part,” Lambert said. “It’s very much rinse and repeat. They’re not looking around for new ideas and inspiration and evolving with the times.”

Still, she added, this kind of simple preppy attire can be appealing to anyone across the political spectrum with “a disposable income, high-powered job or packed schedule, who doesn’t want to have to fuss over their clothes.”

Chan highlighted the “respectability and hierarchy” in traditional footwear choices.

“There’s also an element of nostalgia,” she said. “In periods of rapid cultural change, clothing can function as reassurance. Referencing older, established silhouettes becomes a way of visually aligning with ideas of continuity and permanence.”

Boxy Suits With Extra-Long ‘Power’ Ties

If the newer corners of MAGA-coded menswear lean into tight, body-conscious silhouettes, traditional political dressing within the movement often goes in the opposite direction: bigger, looser and more deliberately old-school.

“I will say there’s a pretty sharp divide between new Republican and old Republican style ― some of that is just generational,” Perry said. “One of the more common criticisms of Trump’s styling is that his suits are too baggy, his tie too long. I do think that mostly comes down to a generational idea that clothes are meant to conceal and make you look slimmer. It’s less about showing off your physique and more about not drawing attention to the body.”

Still, the effect isn’t always polished, with ill-fitting proportions like jackets that hang too long and ties that seem closer to the knees than the belt.

Wraparound Sunglasses, Baseball Caps, Especially In Red And Camo, The All-Black Tech Bro Look, Uber-Tight Shirts And Pants, Tactical And Military-Inspired Gear, Red, White And Blue ... Style watchers have noted Trump's affinity for extra-long and large ties.

“Sometimes I do wonder if the slightly off tailoring is intentional because it shows you’re not trying too hard when you get dressed every day,” Perry said. “That you have bigger concerns than what you’re wearing. I’m not an elite, I’m just like you!”

There are other elements of symbolism in this business formal suit look perhaps meant to project wealth and authority, however.

“The red tie, often called a ‘power tie,’ paired with a blue suit and white shirt mirrors the American flag and has been widely seen in Republican debates and  campaign appearances,” Chan noted.

Testa sees an emphasis on permanence and other cultural values as well.

“Another element sometimes overlooked in menswear is the Christian religious influence, which comes through in clean, conservative grooming, avoidance of outspoken styling or colors and relying on a uniformly respectable public presentation,” she said.

Above all, context is key in assessing the messaging behind clothing choices, including suits.

“When we talk about formal, tailored, classic suiting, it is perceived differently based on context,” Testa said. “When worn in a business professional environment, there isn’t an expectation of political coding, but when worn in situations where dress codes are more ambiguous, it can be interpreted differently.”

So, politically coded fashion is less about specific new garments and more about accumulation and heightened visibility. Wraparound sunglasses thus carry more meaning in conjunction with a compression shirt and camo hat than on their own.

“In a politically charged climate, everyday clothing combinations can take on amplified meaning simply because audiences are more attuned to visual cues,” Chan said. “When certain items like red caps, patriotic motifs or traditional business attire are repeatedly shown in political contexts, they become  shorthand for identity, even if the wearer’s intent is simply personal preference.”

She stressed that clothing has become a way to signal belonging or resistance across the political spectrum as well.

“In that sense, MAGA fashion reflects a broader moment where style functions as communication,” Chan said. “The garments themselves are often classic American staples, but what changes is the cultural lens through which they’re seen.”
