I put a computer monitor stand on my kitchen counter, and it's more brilliant than I expected

Before moving into my apartment last fall, I expected I'd need to pick up a few kitchen essentials like a drying rack and a coffee maker. What I didn't predict was that despite my new kitchen having plenty of space and modern appliances, it'd be missing an item found in all of my previous homes: a silverware drawer.

At first, the lack of a built-in organizer frustrated me, until I realized I could repurpose a computer monitor stand from my office into a stylish and functional countertop utensil holder. It fits in so seamlessly, you'd never know it wasn't originally meant for the kitchen.

Why a Monitor Stand Is a Brilliant Storage Gem

Just because my IKEA monitor stand was designed to support a computer doesn't mean that's the only way to use it. With its short height (just 4 inches) and understated design, it can be stored on practically any countertop and effortlessly blend into any room no matter the style. It helps that this monitor stand comes in both black and white options to complement the established aesthetic.

Most importantly, though, is its ample and conveniently slidable drawer space, with multiple divided compartments. Sure, you can use the drawer to stow a keyboard, but who says you can't instead turn it into an organizer for makeup, pens, sauce packets or even silverware, like I do? Plus, it's so affordable at just $30 that I may just get another one to use in my office or bathroom.

What Happened When I Put a Monitor Stand in My Kitchen

The moment I placed the monitor stand on my kitchen countertop, I knew it was the right choice. All of my utensils fit snugly into the main 17.75-inch-wide bamboo drawer (which slides in to keep things tidy), and I filled the smaller side sections with chopsticks, bag clips, and soy sauce dishes. I also love that the sturdy top can support over 40 pounds, so I use it as a platform for several small items like a succulent, napkin holder, and egg timer.

Would it be nice if my kitchen had a traditional silverware holder built into the cabinets? Absolutely. But honestly, I've grown to prefer using the monitor stand. Every time I have guests over, they compliment its look and usefulness, and I've learned that having all my utensils so easily accessible saves me valuable time when preparing meals.
