Lay's just launched this limited-edition potato chip flavor in the US., and I already wish I got 2 more bags

In my house, potato chips are definitely a pantry staple. I'll throw a few in a sandwich to add a little crunch, or grab a handful to snack on before dinner. And while I am fond of so many of the big potato chip brands, I will always be loyal to the OG: Lay's.

Nothing beats a classic Lay's potato chip, but the brand just announced three new limited-edition flavors that might just give the standard bag a run for its money. I got all three flavors the day they were announced - here are my thoughts.

What You Should Know About Lay's Limited‑Edition FIFA World Cup 2026 Flavors

This year the FIFA World Cup is returning to North America for the first time in decades. To celebrate, Lay's is hoping to bring fans together through flavors inspired by global cuisines.

There are 40 limited-edition flavors launching in North America, South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia, but the three available in the United States are Lay's Argentinian‑Style Steak with Chimichurri, Lay's Brazilian‑Style Garlic Sauce, and Lay's Wavy French Onion Soup. The three flavors were announced just this morning, and they will be available for purchase in early May.

My Honest Review of Lay's Limited‑Edition FIFA World Cup 2026 Flavors

Lay's Wavy French Onion Soup

The French Onion Soup flavor was the one I was most excited about when I heard about this World Cup series. Lay's says this flavor features cheddar cheese and fine herbs, but I was a little underwhelmed by the taste. To me, the chip tastes like a fresh black pepper flavor with some subtle onion and cheese undertones.

I had some of my colleagues try them as well, and others agreed the flavor was definitely on the mild side. "It was slightly cheesy and oniony, but I felt like the flavor could have been punchier," Associate Editor Alex Foster said. Another person mentioned that they like how the flavor isn't so in-your-face (which proves that taste really is subjective!). I'm glad, however, that Lay's chose this shape for this flavor; the wavy ones are super crunchy and crisp.

Lay's Argentinian‑Style Steak with Chimichurri

The Argentinian-Style Steak with Chimichurri flavor was really delicious, but it's worth noting that it's not suitable for people who don't eat meat. Before we read the fine print in the ingredients list to find beef fat listed, a vegetarian in the office did try them (and actually said this flavor was her favorite, and poured a small bowl for herself).

This chip mostly tastes like chimichurri; it has notes of cilantro, lemon, basil, bay, thyme, oregano, parsley, and garlic. But I also got a subtle smoky and char-like flavor that resembled a steak right from the grill. This chip was also the traditional light and crispy one, which I have no complaints about.

Lay's Brazilian‑Style Garlic Sauce

I am definitely a "garlic girl," so it was no surprise to me that the Brazilian-Style Garlic Sauce flavor was my favorite. The garlic flavor is very prominent, but I loved it. This flavor also has lemon in it, which adds some tang and helps cut through the richness of the garlic. I was surprised by how it almost tasted creamy - just like I would imagine a garlic sauce would.

Foster agreed, saying this flavor was her favorite, but she wished it were on a kettle-style chip because she wanted it to be a little thicker and have slightly more crunch. Our Principal Product Designer Henry Chen also had notes on the chip itself: "I wish it were a ruffled chip," he said. "It's almost too much for a light chip." If I were rooting for a team solely based on the chip I loved most from this collection, it'd be Brazil!
