Tiny munchkin cat arrives at rescue and staff discover she’s a medical mystery

When Blueberry arrived at Out of the Woods Rescue, she was a bit of a medical mystery. A munchkin cat of some sort obtained from a breeder, Blueberry had so many issues that her owner was planning to euthanize her before the rescue stepped in. They had their work cut out for them, but as soon as they met Blueberry, they knew there was no way they could give up on her.

As soon as she was safe in their care, the rescue did a thorough examination to figure out what was going on in the tiny cat’s body.

“She was struggling with severe allergies and secondary bacterial infections,” Diane Nobles, cofounder of Out of the Woods Rescue, told The Dodo. “She was so itchy she was licking and scratching herself raw!”

The rescue started Blueberry on several medications and put caps on her nails so she wouldn’t hurt herself. They put her on a special diet and crossed their fingers that all of these steps would result in Blueberry finally starting to feel better. Everything was working and everyone was thrilled, until they discovered another issue.

“We finally got her skin to an impeccable place — no raw areas, no infection, full hair growth, and were ready to put her up for adoption when we noticed some odd chewing behaviors,” Nobles said. “Upon further inspection, she had two large masses in the back of her mouth and underwent full mouth extractions and mass removals.”

Now, Blueberry is a 1-year-old, 4-pound tiny cat with no teeth. While she still has her struggles, they are manageable, and she’s looking for the right family to help her live a healthy, balanced life.

“She is very curious and loves people,” Nobles said. “She currently resides with two foster brothers (Hunk and Scott), and despite being tiny compared to them, in true diva fashion, she acts like the alpha … Despite her little legs, she can jump up onto the couch for snuggle time and can go up and down the stairs. She travels well as she often comes to work with me and doesn't mind the car rides. She loves coming to work because she knows people are going to fuss over her.”

Blueberry is looking for someone who can see past her ailments to the incredible cat she is. She’ll need a little help managing her conditions, but the love she’ll give back will make it all worth it.

“The perfect home would just be able to provide love and patience, which she is so deserving of after already going through so much in the first year of her life,” Nobles said.
