CLEVELAND, Ohio — Burgers are one of those foods that can spark instant debate. Thick or thin? Loaded or classic? Crispy edges or juicy center? This National Hamburger Month, we’re celebrating all of it — because around Northeast Ohio, there’s no shortage of ways to stack up a great burger.

From neighborhood bar staples to smash-style steakburgers, we pulled highlights from three recent stops that reminded us why burgers remain one of America’s most dependable cravings.
Pounders Bar & Grill: Big burgers, neighborhood bar energy
At Pounders Bar & Grill, burgers are a centerpiece of the menu — and for good reason.

This neighborhood favorite, which finished third in Cleveland.com’s Best Places to Eat and Drink in Parma and Parma Heights poll, serves up hand-ground half-pound burgers paired with fresh-cut signature-seasoned fries.
That hand-ground detail matters. It gives the burger a fresher, more substantial bite, making it feel like the kind of burger built for two hands and plenty of napkins.

The fresh-cut fries don’t hurt either. Bonus points if you’re a malt vinegar person.

Pounders keeps its burger game rooted in scratch-made quality — fitting for a place that makes much of its menu, sauces and sides in-house.
Sometimes, a burger doesn’t need tricks. Just beef, a grill and a cold drink nearby.
Ale Mary’s: A burger with attitude
First-place poll winner Ale Mary’s isn’t shy about elevating bar food.
And its burger entry? Definitely not subtle.
The Sloppy Piglet takes a half-pound beef patty and piles it with thick-cut bacon, smoked gouda, chipotle BBQ sauce, house slaw and pickled red onions.

That’s not just a burger. That’s a commitment.
It’s messy in all the right ways — smoky, tangy, crunchy and rich. The kind of burger where your first bite is a balancing act and your last bite leaves sauce on your wrist.
Ale Mary’s hand-cut fries come standard, which helps round out the meal, but let’s be honest: the burger is doing most of the heavy lifting.
This one leans into bold flavor and doesn’t apologize for it.
Freddy’s vs. Steak ’n Shake: The steakburger showdown
Not all burgers are thick pub builds. Sometimes, the beauty is in the smash.
The focus? Thin patties, crispy edges, bun quality and overall flavor.
Freddy’s consistently edged out Steak ’n Shake thanks to stronger sear, better crisp edges and more consistent cheese melt.
Its mustard-forward build gave the burgers a tangier, sharper profile, while Steak ’n Shake leaned sweeter with ketchup in the mix.
The standout from Freddy’s was the Triple Steakburger — three patties, plenty of pickles and onions, and enough crispy edge to satisfy the smashburger crowd.
Meanwhile, Steak ’n Shake’s strongest showing came from its Garlic Double Steakburger, where garlic butter on the bun helped boost flavor in a lineup that otherwise felt under-seasoned.
When it comes to steakburgers, crisp edges are king — and Freddy’s took the crown.
Final bite
Whether you’re craving a thick half-pound pub burger, a sauce-loaded specialty sandwich or a crispy-edged steakburger, National Burger Month is the perfect excuse to beef up your dining plans.
And if there’s one lesson from all of this?
Life’s too short for boring burgers.
