Live look at Northeast Ohio roads: How to track travel impacts during Friday’s snow

CLEVELAND, Ohio — As a clipper system moves through Northeast Ohio, drivers are urged to closely monitor road conditions Friday as multiple rounds of snow, gusty winds and sharply colder air create hazardous travel during both the morning and evening commutes.

Forecasters say light to moderate snow will impact the entire region Friday morning, with snow-covered roads and reduced visibility slowing travel. Conditions are expected to worsen again in the evening as an Arctic cold front brings snow showers or squalls, blowing snow and rapidly falling temperatures.

A winter weather advisory has been expanded to include all of Northeast Ohio, with forecasters citing accumulating snow during the morning commute and the potential for rapidly deteriorating road conditions Friday evening as the front moves through.

What drivers should know Friday

A brief period of freezing drizzle is possible early Friday morning in parts of Northeast Ohio before steadier snow develops, which could lead to isolated slick spots on untreated roads during the start of the morning commute.

Snow then overspreads the region through the morning, with the steadiest snowfall expected through midday. While snowfall totals are not expected to be extreme, cold temperatures will allow any snow that falls to accumulate on roads.

A relative lull in snowfall is expected for a few hours Friday afternoon, but drivers are cautioned that conditions are likely to deteriorate quickly again late in the day as an Arctic cold front sweeps through the region between roughly 4 and 8 p.m. A broken band of snow showers — and possibly snow squalls — could produce sudden drops in visibility, rapidly snow-covered roads and a quick burst of accumulation with little warning.

Behind the front, gusty winds may reach 35 to 45 mph, leading to blowing and drifting snow and further reductions in visibility.
