How to watch 'The Devil Wears Prada 2' — with brunch

Nearly 20 years ago, “The Devil Wears Prada” transformed Lauren Weisberger’s New York Times best-selling novel of the same name into a cult classic film starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway.

On Friday, May 1, the highly anticipated sequel, “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” gets its world premiere, expected to draw massive crowds from across the globe. According to Variety, global ticket sales could reach $190 million for the opening weekend.

Two metro Detroit theaters are pairing the film’s premiere with a meal, and it’s arguably the liveliest meal of the day: brunch.

Excitement for the film is running high. Big brands like Starbucks are tapping into the fanfare surrounding the premiere with a global collaboration with the 20th Century Studios film — a themed menu of beverages inspired by the movie’s characters are available for a limited time — and fashion enthusiasts are organizing special screenings around town.

Forget dinner and a movie, Emagine Royal Oak and the State Theatre in Ann Arbor are each organizing brunch and a movie for the weekend premier of “The Devil Wears Prada 2.”

Popcorn is the standard complement to a great film, but would you turn down a cold-smoked salmon Benedict topped with chive cream cheese, onions, arugula and briny capers, if it was offered? Emagine Royal Oak is doing just that, serving a buffet of brunch staples in the theater's banquet hall an hour before the film starts. The buffet will be stocked with other savory options, such as chicken Caprese sandwiches drizzled with housemade pesto mayonnaise on a brioche bun and grilled salmon salads with sherry vinaigrette. Among the sweet offerings, think crème brûlée French toast, bacon coated in maple brown sugar, fruit bowls, yogurt parfaits and an assortment of pastries.

"Our goal is always to evolve the moviegoing experience," Ally Smith, chief marketing officer at Emagine Entertainment wrote via email. "With events like our Devil Wears Prada 2 Brunch & a Movie at our Royal Oak location, we’re creating immersive moments that connect with our audiences in a more meaningful and memorable way."

Fill your belly before the show, then kick back in a comfy recliner for the main attraction. If no movie is complete without a bucket of popcorn, snacks are always available for purchase at the concession stand. And if you can’t make it the debut weekend, another brunch and movie is being held on Mother’s Day, May 10.
