Palm Beach Gardens, often called “The Gardens,” has a unique history that reflects its evolution from wilderness to a vibrant, family-friendly city.

The city was incorporated in 1959 by insurance magnate John D. MacArthur. The area was largely undeveloped at the time, with the 1960 census recording only one resident — a man living in a shack without water or electricity, according to the Palm Beach Gardens Historical Society.

MacArthur envisioned a thriving community and took bold steps to make it a reality. He worked with the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) to bring its headquarters to the city, cementing golf as a key aspect of its identity.
